Ah just in the US. Gotcha. I still have the 2 on my radar for my next car!

Those old enough will remember when Windows first gained traction and every bloody app was "Win" something-or-other. Now Omarchy has taken off and every app and plug-in is "Oma" something-or-other.

How about instead of subsidising batteries and putting the onus of storage on the customer, we force electricity companies to pay us for electricity at a rate closer to what we pay them? I pay them 50c per kWh, but they pay me on average around 5c. It's crazy. @chrisbowenmp.bsky.social

The noun should be spelled "promice". Don't at me.

If you run a YouTube channel, there's still time to rethink that AI-generated thumbnail before I click "don't recommend channel" on your video and never see you again.

I admit to being a little spoiled by Omarchy's update procedure. It takes seconds. Windows' takes minutes.

There's a human designer somewhere who historically has made flyers with a yellow/red/brown pallet, paint brush strokes to highlight text, and bold fonts, and Chat GPT has completely ruined their life.

Back in Windows on my home PC for the first time in two months. Mostly just to make sure updates are applied, but I could do with some grown-up power management from an OS for a change. 😅

Yeah I went with Omarchy because of Hyprland. I really like the tiling window manager approach but of course didn't want to set the whole thing up from scratch myself. :)

There's a degree of cognitive dissonance, for sure. Especially since I investigated Linux after Nadella helped fund Trump's ballroom. Omarchy is a good fit for me and I don't personally have to fund any billionaires.

Bash gets it.
Me asking the Bash shell where Mitch McConnell is, and it replying "missing".

Yeah I'm aware. But funding "for Omarchy" I take to mean funding for the various OSS components that make up Omarchy. As much as I dislike the guy, I don't think he's skimming off the top of the foundation.

Matt Hamilton @mabster.net · 02/09/2026
The "funding" is for the Omacom foundation though, which sponsors open-source projects. So I'm not concerned about that. They've already committed to funding Hyprland and Quickshell, for example.

Coming up on two months using Omarchy now. Haven't booted into Windows since installing. DHH is inspirational when talking about computers, but abhorrent when talking about politics. I'm taking solace in the fact that Omarchy is not a commercial venture so I'm not funnelling money to fascists.

Getting lots of micro NBN dropouts this morning in North Albury. Internet connection drops for 5-10 seconds and comes back. No reported outage ... frustrating.

Honestly, tinkering with Linux has been the first good use of LLMs that I've found. Letting OpenCode read logs and suggest changes/fixes has been a very cool experience for this Linux newb.

Matt Hamilton @mabster.net · 07/08/2026
Managed to kill my Omarchy session tonight with an OpenCode-generated script so thoroughly that the PC wouldn't even boot. I had to unplug the mains power and hold the power button in for 15 seconds to drain the motherboard. Never seen anything like it before.

If the Australian Labor Party just did what was good for the majority of the Australian population and ignored how absolutely shit the opposition and ON were, they’d be even further ahead in the polls with less to worry about. #Auspol.

Omarchy is absolutely not targeted at non-technical people, but I can see a future where an OS doesn't need a whole suite of settings dialogs and instead has a simple voice/chat interface. "Make Visual Studio Code always launch on workspace 3" - and the appropriate config files are updated.

LLMs ("AI") tend towards the global average of everything, so they're horrible for creative tasks and produce slop. However, I'm coming around when it comes to things that you *want* to be average. I've been using OpenCode to help me configure/diagnose Linux. I don't want creativity for that.

Hot take: Magneto being a holocaust survivor didn't even make sense back when the original X-Men movie (set in the "not-too-distant future") came out in 2000. It'd be dumb to do it again now and hand wave it away with some stupid "he's a mutant so he's long-lived" excuse.

Took some finagling to get it working, but I have completed a game of The Binding of Isaac: Repentance on Omarchy. So that's something.

Hello from Omarchy! Finally got it installed on my new PC. Early days but it seems to be running pretty well!

It's weird, the pride you feel for doing things many people would consider mundane. I haven't opened a desktop PC in decades so that was scary for me.

As much as I hate generative AI, I am finding the built-in Copilot app quite handy for answering questions like "what the hell does this mean?"

It's done! I did have to unplug the 5070 because the M2 ports were underneath it, but overall it was more fiddly than difficult.

Confirmed! Picked up a $20 Logitech mouse and it does not keep the PC awake. It's a flimsy little thing though. At least I know I can buy a better quality dongle-based mouse and it'll do the job.
020
Matt Hamilton @mabster.net · 19/06/2026
And yeah, I tried turning the mouse off too, to no avail. The dongle itself is the issue.
010
Matt Hamilton @mabster.net · 19/06/2026
So annoying! I'm hoping a more modern mouse might have better shielding in the USB dongle. Fingers crossed.
110
Matt Hamilton @mabster.net · 18/06/2026
It was the mouse dongle. 2.4GHz interference strikes again. Even plugged directly into the PC it still prevents sleep. Will drop $30 on a new mouse this weekend in case it's a dodgy dongle rather than just a technology problem.

Something I've plugged into my Dell ultrawide (which is also a USB dock) is preventing Windows from turning off the screen. The screen turns off after three minutes, but immediately turns back on. I have some sleuthing to do on the weekend. I suspect it's the mouse dongle.

I got a new keyboard - the Nuphy Air75 v3. One tiny thing I didn't realise would take time to get used to is that the F keys aren't grouped together in sets of four with gaps between them, so my muscle memory of finding F5 has been disrupted.
