How Decolonisation Divides the World in Two | Boudry
After 7 October, Maarten Boudry saw decolonisation for what it really is: a rigid, almost Manichaean ideology that splits the world into evil colonisers and innocent victims, with no room in between. On this view, one side is irredeemable and deserves whatever comes. The other is absolved of everything. Any atrocity it commits is reframed as an understandable response to past injustice. And the more extreme the violence, the greater the wrongs it's assumed to answer. Full narration on the Quillette channel. "What Did You Think Decolonisation Meant?" | Maarten Boudry
On 7 October, writer Najma Sharif posted seven mocking words that racked up tens of thousands of likes: what did people think decolonisation meant, if not this? Maarten Boudry was exactly who she was mocking. The academic who assumed decolonisation was just papers, essays, and well-meaning proposals to diversify the curriculum. That day he learned how wrong he had been. Full narration on the Quillette channel. Good news! For the first time in at least 25 years, more than half of global billionaire wealth is now held by self-made entrepreneurs who earned their fortunes through competitive market activities, i.e. the rest of us buying their products. No inherited dynasties, plunder or expropriation.

This is the best piece yet written on the Jason Arday affair. Finally, someone else is suitably outraged by the disgraceful behaviour of Arday and his defenders at Cambridge and beyond
If what is arguably the most coveted academic position in this field can be given to an apparently exorbitantly fraudulent scholar with a crepe-paper-thin record of serious publications, and he is then protected by lots of Very Important People who might as well be promising that up is down and left is right and that only bigots disagree, serious scholars in aligned fields, with less coveted positions at less prestigious (and protected) universities - and I know several such people - all stand to suffer in perpetuity.

Some academics seem to be committed to proving that conservative enemies of academia are entirely right about it. I still think they aren't and that most scholars just want to ignore this shit to stay out of trouble, but that there are professional academics defending obvious plagiarism is shocking

Maarten Boudry: October 7 Changed My Mind
Maarten Boudry isn't Jewish and had no personal connection to Israel. At first he barely followed the news, filing 7 October away with every other jihadist attack he assumed the West had finally learned to recognise. He was certain of one thing: that no colleague or friend could ever condone the slaughter of young people at a music festival. Within hours, he was proved wrong. Not from the usual quarters, but from left-wing academics at prestigious universities, reaching for the language of decolonisation to celebrate what had just happened. That was the moment his complacency broke. . . . #MaartenBoudry #Decolonisation #Antisemitism #Academia #Universities #Philosophy #Israel #October7 #FreeSpeech

I always enjoy a good debunking of nostalgia for a "Golden Age". This one I actually lived through! I can attest that kids in the 80s-90s watched tons of TV. At home, we only had a lousy black-and-white set with no cable, and screen time was rationed. But I made up for it at my friends' houses. 😉

From today, I identify as Māori. I've always felt that I was a Māori trapped in a Caucasian body. If you refuse to accept that my ethnic identity doesn't align with my race assigned at birth (RAAB), you're engaging in a form of "existential denial"—and I will sue you for symbolic genocide. /1

It's not just the Left that's suffering from cognitive dissonance about heat waves. The Right can't seem to make up their minds either. You can't have it both ways: ➡️Pooh-pooh extreme heat: "Don't be so alarmist, chill out and go for a swim!" ➡️Blame anti-A/C Greens for thousands of heat deaths.
