I guess it's finally time for me to read Normal People. And as always, Free Palestine.

I wrote this piece the moment I found out my little forest had burned down, last November. At the time I was in the middle of writing an essay about my dead dad, so inevitably the two collided.

Whistler will stay with me forever. Favourite book of the year so far. Quite disappointed by The Things We Never Say, I found it very superficial.
Summary of my books read in August, with Ann Patchett's Whistler getting 5 stars

I took this picture on April 20, 2022, two days after my dad's death. It was my first time being back in my native village in 10 years. This place, Assas, is so very important to me.
Photo of a landscape from the south of France, layering a few old olive trees with a low pine forest, below an overcast sky. The landscape is verdant and serene.

The nausea doesn't ever really go away either, although it becomes more about being vulnerable in public about my thoughts. It is a mystery to me why I keep writing these essays, considering how they make me feel. #essay #essaywriting #writinglife #writerslife #criticalessay

I am not sure if I am over stimulating my brain, or pushing it beyond what it can do. I never feel this way writing fiction or personal essays.

Lys Granier @lysgranier.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
Writing critical essays makes me feel nauseous and restless. When in the midst of developing them, I have agitated nights where my brain desperately tries to connect thoughts, form sentences and edit them, and I can't snap out of it. During the day, I am nauseated at any thought of my essay.

Sometimes I hesitate between the two, but I noticed there is a facial expression I make when I read a parenthesis that I don't make when I read between em-dashes. It's like micro-sarcasm, an almost invisible wink.

Lys Granier @lysgranier.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
My favourite form of punctuation since I could form a sentence in my mother tongue, French. When I started writing in English I converted to mostly using the Em-dash because I didn't see the parenthesis used much, but recently I've started incorporating it more in my writing (and it's delightful!)

2. I let my adrenaline lower over the course of hours, my body had fully gotten ready for a fight. As I was just reaching a state of relative rest, my 16 y/o cat collapsed and started convulsing.

Yesterday was one of the most chaotic days of my life. 1. I witnessed a man attacking a woman and her toddler with a knife in my back alley, ran out at the same time as other bystanders to stop it; the man fled. It was a stranger attack, he had followed them from the grocery store.

And again no one answered, and the membrane stayed strong. My tears dried, leaving behind salt pulling at my skin. The wound is closed again, for now. In a few weeks it'll reopen, and it'll feel as raw as April 18, 2022, and I will call for him, and dry my tears, and resume my day.

And the wound reopened, as deep as it ever was, for maybe 30 minutes. I cried, and I cried, and I tried to break through the invisible membrane between me and death to let him know that he's still missed. I called him, "Papa, papa," the same way I have done since day one.
