Another day, another lesson on genre fiction! My ENG 215 students start their deep dive into Batman: The Killing Joke today. Love days when discussion happens.

As a disciple that popular culture deserves a space in the canon. And that kind of student success, in that environment, from just the first book tells me Pink Horror has the power of purrrrrr'-pose and meaning. I can't wait to see what these kids do with these narratives when we add comparative...

I'm saying all this because we just saw a study drop arguing that long-form narrative is dying. But theyre essential, where we learn our humanity--and it's genre fiction and popular culture that can resurrect it. Students resonate with pop culture and genre. We need to level valuation and accept

And ended our solo time with Black Sheep, moving to Forgotten Sisters next week. I'm happy to report that discussions were rigorous and enthusiastic, with at least 40% participating in chats. Plus, out of 32, 8 have pulled me aside and told me they love the class and the reading thus far.

I just went with it. I decided to treat it as an experiment. Though my 2nd read of each l am essentially looking at them with a scholar's eyes for the first time, just as they are. So we do reading journals together, breakout chats, and lectures--its a book club on steroids. We finished week 4 today

Plus, 32 Gez Z, mostly freshmen, almost all non-English majors, from 6 to 8:50 on Thursday night? Have you driven a campus when classes end on Thursday? It's like pregame starts as the classroom door closes lmao. So in short? They can be A TOUGH crowd. But I didn't need my scholar eyes to know...

But if I love them, why am I saying the risky part? Because horror is risky especially when they have no clue that's what they're getting. And you know as well as I do..."Pink horror" can be even more problematic on different levels in this climate. And since I err on the side of "I don't care"...

I stop being a scary ass bitch and do what I normally do--what noone else does in academia. Off the canon for me, thanks. My righteous rage led me to my keyboard and I immediately emailed the bookstore my current dream assigned reading list made of my five favorite femalr-authored reads of last 5yrs

A horrible term students will debate, but I digress. I almost went the safe route--haunted houses or maybe vampires or King--but I couldn't pull the trigger. A TT asking for one's ideal book list for an introduction to Horror Studies class was easy for me. And I thought wait, I can do that if

For ENG 105 this term, i went rogue and decided to teach books i personally love but that I haven't considered for classroom value or analytical options and depth. Books I've only read once but live rent free in my head make up the list, and instead of boring haunted houses I chose "Pink Horror"

Whatever you do, please don’t stop reading. Read for joy. Read for education. Read for resistance. Read banned books. Read books by marginalized authors. Read about experiences that differ from your own. Just. Keep. Reading.

Never let the fascist bigots of the world convince you that you can’t make a difference. Don’t let them steal your light. We can ALL make a difference. Small acts of kindness and resistance, when done by large amounts of people, can and do change the world.
