I wouldn't have a problem with shops becoming showrooms, that order in or post purchases to you (when they started, this is how dept stores worked) (and it's kind of how "bricks and clicks" promised to work). Just carry a full inventory, display and light it well, and have staff who know their stuff

Our local Boots is SO awful. Grim meal deals. Grim "Christmas presents". Toiletries priced to disprove the optimism of the official inflation figures. And prescription pick up, it's ostensible USP, can take an hour of queuing.

Lovely shop. Lovely picture of it. Had an Arthur Rackham Santa print in the window years ago I really coveted as a kid.

Not sure what it says about the state of the economy or the supply chain but this tin of tomatoes had a HARD life on its way to our delivery.

How did this martyrdom recruitment work? Did they pop a note in "about us" on the website? Draft up a post for LinkedIn?

No. Gave a speech in July saying he wanted it to report in 2027 not 2028. So should be in a year earlier than scheduled by Wes Streeting.

IF he's going to work from the Casey review, there's no time this Parliament. They've told her to get a wiggle on, but pt1 on the current crisis isn't out yet, never mind pt2 on a national care service. Add debate, legislation... funding, set-up...

Also, return of human agents, in areas where AI and bots can combine to create scams. Travel agents (to make sure your holiday destination actually exists). Insurance agents (to make sure your direct debit is going to a firm that is insuring your house). Etc.

Yay! Battlestar Galactica! Surprised only seen six. And some fractions (Office: never liked Gervais, Thick of It: depressed to think accurate). Couple out cos love the books (Handmaid's Tale, Station Eleven). Would like to see Andor and The Pitt, but what would it cost to stream everything here?!

I had a hip replacement last year. You can't do anything bit lie flat for a couple of weeks. Lined up Breaking Bad for the duration. Managed 2.5 episodes. Just yuk.

See, I don't remember that. Used to commute into Waterloo and was amazed at the self organising systems that got people onto The Drain and Jubillee lines. HUNDREDS of people snaking around the concourses in single line queues, wierdly silent.

250,000 jobs gone in retail in the past five years. Lots of discussion about wgat WILL the impact of automation, AI etc be... but almost none of the huge impact already seen in areas that ate invisible or "don't matter" somehow.

In some areas. Used to live in Swindon and that absolutely had more in common with other M4 corridor towns than Wiltshire. Wouldn't say the M3 feels the same. Cities do have historic identity. Viability would change a lot if councils shed social care, eg to an NCS (but didn't happen in Scotland).

Are they? I expect you'd put Hants CC and the Soton, Pompey, Winchester DCs in your terrible list. And Hants is a poor steward for Winchester, and at loggerheads politically. But the council plan for "Winchester" included lots of random countryside, wasn't felt, and didn't look viable.

I worked at Woolies in Swindon in the 80s. Videos of the fire were part of our induction, and we had regular drills. I'm the one person in an office to move if the alarm goes off to this day. Fire can move so fast.

The company should never have bee allowed anywhere near the NHS. Its background, security, and policing contracts should have ruled it out. Now it emerges it has compromised officials and shaded PR claims. And many trusts say it's not even very good...

Day after Brexit there were people in Southampton A&E telling staff "we've just voted to get rid of you lot." Awful. Also a sobering insight into what a chunk of the kippers mean when they say Brexit hasn't failed because it hasn't been done properly.

I don't own a car and have four of the bl**dy things on my phone. Supplemenary rule: if car park owners are going to insist on payment by app they should provide sufficient wifi or 5g coverage to download and use them.

This is why the coalition era / May schemes proposed a levy on house value. But that window is probably closing with the decline in home ownership.

Problem is, if insurance is based on individual risk, there will still be an unequal burden / affordability issue. If it's based on population risk, it's basically a tax, but with less efficient collection. Councils already cap eligibilty and care home costs: private payers subsidise the sector.

Yeh. Finding the tone of the BBC coverage off. Shearer saying the kicking, fouling and cheating is the mark of "men." Richards saying the passion is great. Old fashioned. Tiresome. It's been grim.
