As previously noted around the idea of a club of middle powers, retreat isn't a good basis for any kind of agreement, still less mistrust. Regardless of the UK debate, the EU faces serious problems from putting off major questions in particular of expansion.

The EU the UK left is still there, indeed this is still the EU of post 2008, stuck unable to contemplate treaty change, facing rising turbulence, and lacking strong leadership. The UK might be part of a renewed debate. But we might all just be shrinking together.

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

There is a further inexorable and accelerating logic since January 2025, February 2026 + ongoing issues. There needs to be a discussion re immigration and the benefits and challenges it presents to the continent and the world. The EU model is also changing, which perhaps not everyone is aware of?

A couple of really radical options - engage in Brussels with why the UK wants to talk and what the EU is actually prepared to offer - learn from what has mostly failed in the approach to the EU question for the last ten years Which would quickly narrow the path forward.

Such good news: “Mayors, local authorities, charities and grassroots groups will be given new funding and responsibilities for restoring natural landscapes such as wetlands, river edges and meadows, which can provide natural flood management and reduce the damage done by droughts.”

Because: it was a blanket approach. ‘immigration’ has many forms and many interpretations. until recently, social care workforce, recruitment and retention was little understood where it needed to be. Astonishing that 3/5 of us are unpaid carers, 1/7 have catastrophic care costs and STILL unseen.

Brilliant! We need the UN, a global entity that remains in spite of rogue incursions. Any organisation that has a sudden reduction in funding will be challenged. The ‘Bureaucrats’ embody management rather than leadership. Several examples of fine leadership in this podcast.
