Technically this parliamentary session has been going on for 484 days (and counting).

I return to my contention that the real benefit of Canadian federalism is that at any given moment there's always one province whose political situation can provide entertainment for everyone else.

17 Independents in the BC Legislative Assembly must proportionally set a modern day record. The tally keeps changing by the hour. #bcpoli

The argument that you have the right to speak English exclusively in the National Assembly per section 133 of the constitution act, 1867 therefore voters who speak exclusively English should be informed where to vote to elect such an MNA is compelling. It changes interpretation of democratic rights.

Kudos to the photo caption writer: "MHA Keith Russell — literally — crosses the floor to sit as an independent, breaking from the PC Party on Sept. 14, 2026."

I was very confused when I first moved to Ottawa. I thought Upper Canadians were obsessed with water billing.

The irony of course is if the courts grant an injunction and require election documents to be sent out in English and in French, there is no mechanism for the notwithstanding clause to be invoked as the National Assembly is dissolved.

NB 511 now refers to Lake Ontario

Lyle Skinner @lyleskinner.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
There is a separate more substantive issue of Google incorrectly listing a part of NB as being in Quebec but that story will have to wait for another day.

NB 511 also calls the Gulf of Mexico, the "Gulf of America". However at this point, it is really really going beyond the intended use of the service.

New Brunswick 511 refers to Lake Ontario as "Lake America". Granted NB is nowhere near the Great Lakes, 511 appears to use the same Google Maps servers as its basemap. #nbpoli

I find this passage to be very confusing given at the end of the day they are both appointed positions where there is no obligation for a Premier to be elected by anyone.

Lyle Skinner @lyleskinner.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
As part of the vetting process, as the LG is appointed by the Governor in Council (on the recommendation by the Prime Minister), my guess is that it would be based on the standard for being functionally bilingual in federal second language exams. If you can't pass the test, you get screened out.
020
Lyle Skinner @lyleskinner.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
What would likely happen is there would now be a requirement to have a BBB or CBC as a language test prior to going any further in appointment. If you don't make it, you are screened out preventing the appointment.
010
Lyle Skinner @lyleskinner.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
There is a lot of (as expected) threading the needle on paragraph 118 between two different appointed positions: LG and Premier. A better administrative argument would be the delegation aspect they touched on. Harder for the LG to delegate their role compared to the Premier

Lyle Skinner @lyleskinner.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
The ruling however does not impact the validity of any Order in Council, Royal Assent or any other action by former Lieutenant Governor Brenda Murphy. However an appointment of an unilingual LG would be invalid if it happened in the future. #nbpoli #cdncrown #cdnlaw #cdnpoli

This application for judicial review is unlikely to be successful. The laws regarding an MP's sessional allowance are quite clear and Parliamentary Privilege means it is up to the House of Commons itself not the individual MP to grant an exception. #cdnpoli #nbpoli #cdnlaw

PEI will be thrilled with the suggestion that it lose 2 seats. When it entered Confederation, it had 6 seats. The entire Senate floor rule in the constitution was to address the relative decline of influence of the Maritimes in an ever expanding Commons.

In the context that if there is a subsequent attempt to suggest that voting yes for independence in a non binding referendum is the same as voting yes in a binding referendum. Makes any legal proceedings a lot clearer as the Court would take judicial notice of the decision of the House of Commons.

I am having the same thought exercise, I could envision a situation of the Commons taking up the matter to provide a definitive answer that there is no clear expression of the will of the population so the government of Canada can unequivocally say it has no authority to negotiate.

Technically, it is still a minority government as the Clerk has not received the certificates of election nor have the new members taken the oath to be able to sit and vote. So there would presumably be a delay before voting on the motion.

Due to the death of candidate in the election for Saint Andrews Ward 3 The s.17(5) of New Brunswick Municipal Elections Act requires the election for that ward to be cancelled and a new by-election called within 3 months #nbpoli #cdnlaw
17(5)Where a candidate dies after the close of nomination and before the poll has closed, the Municipal Electoral Officer, upon being satisfied of the fact of the death, shall countermand notice of the poll and as soon as is practicable fix a date for a by-election to be held within three months after the election.

17(6)Where action is taken under subsection (5) in a municipality where candidates are elected by ward, the countermand and by-election shall be effective only with respect to the ward in which the candidate has died.
