I’ve dreamed of coming to Lhasa for many years. While i’ve visited Tibetan communities in Ladakh, Dharamshala, Sikkim and Mustang, Lhasa legitimately feels like the centre of a civilisation.

The Great Mosque of Xi’an is spectacular. With its walled courtyards, ceremonial gates and Arabic Ṣīnī-style calligraphy, it offers an authentically Chinese vision of Islamic architecture. We visited at sunset. As prayers began, a light rain began to fall. It was a beautiful and moving experience.

Tenkar monastery houses a rare statue of Tsongkhapa, allegedly made by the man himself around 1400 CE. He is the founder of the influential Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, who have generally held political power in historic Tibet.

Great article, from one of the sharpest contemporary thinkers on the Left: “the far right often finds the efforts of liberal rationalists to fact-check them … to be unbearably naive and funny… liberals are fools to imagine logic, truth, and facts have anything to do with whose values prevail.”
