We have a Forno Bravo pizza oven and sometimes throw in steak, veggies, have done bread and bagels, and some thin desserts like galettes and tarts. The heat range is amazing and can be super creatively stimulating.

Those look great, but the dough there really seems to be the key -- how long do you ferment and how much kneading/mixing/flipping?

That peel implies you do this on the regular. For me, the margherita is the true classic, but simplifying back to neapolitan style also opens up all sorts of ingredient combinations and possibilities.

The pizza steel is immeasurably better. The marketing about conducting the heat to the dough/crust more efficiently is absolutely true. Nothing beats a pizza oven, but during the winter months and for small groups, a pizza steel in a household oven does the job.

Oh damn, I am thinking of a Tribune Tower-type competition, imagining all the visions that point the way to 21st-century architecture. But before anything else, I thought "what would Venturi Scott Brown's submission look like?"

By coincidence, I got to write about Harding's death today. He had a heart attack and suffered for a couple days; his handlers claimed it was indigestion due to bad crab on a West Coast trip. Then he had another one and died. West Coaster + Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover was on the trip with him.

That started out interesting and ended up stupendously fascinating. I'd be willing to watch a documentary or a Netflix series about that pool cue.

of a self-fulfilling prophecy I could imagine. Otherwise, it bordered on fraud, a conspiracy in favor of white homeowners. And Wright drew it all out there on the record. 12/12 These kinds of finds sustain me.

Wright then illustrated several instances in which Black residency pushed rents and values UP (often because Black renters and buyers were desperate to break out of segregated districts and have more housing options). It was the most egregious ignorance 11/n

with opposing witnesses under oath, how hollow the logic of race and real estate was. The Louisville assessor admitted that when a white resident asked for a lower assessment because a black neighbor moved in, HE ALWAYS GRANTED IT. No questions asked. 10/n

which meant that he knew real estate well, as banks and insurance companies were often the only sources of capital for Black mortgages and real estate investments. I came across this transcript a few years ago and I am happy to sing Wright's praises through the ages for illustrating 9/n

William Wright was a Howard-trained attorney who was not a civil rights attorney (that era didn't come until Charles Hamilton Houston transformed Howard Law in the 1920s) but since he was one of the few Black attorneys in KY represented a Black client. Wright was an insurance and bank executive 8/n

Anyways, the Harris case was included in the Supreme Court record and while Buchanan was not decided on real estate logic, it's got this amazing record of not only the racial superstition that guided real estate practice for generations, but this masterful takedown by a super skilled attorney. 7/n

Buchanan is particularly notable because Moorfield Storey, a Boston Brahmin, former secretary to Senator Charles Sumner and one of the founders of the NAACP, won. Not by arguing about civil rights, but that the segregation ordinance violated property rights. 6/n

The Buchanan v. Warley case was an absolutely brilliantly constructed test where city segregationists were forced to represent the interests of Warley, a Louisville civil rights activist, and the NAACP represented Buchanan, an Indiana real estate guy. 5/n

The case was Louisville v. Harris and it was bundled with Buchanan v. Warley, the NAACP challenge to the Louisville segregation ordinance. The ordinances (starting in Baltimore) designated blocks white or Black and residents of the opposite race could not move into the block 4/n

The Black lawyer (William Wright) defending his client absolutely destroyed the real estate guy by asking him several detailed questions that illustrated the lawyer knew as much about real estate as the expert and got him to admit his premises were contradicted by actual sales data. 3/n

In politics, we’re torn between ideals and practicalities, aspirations and realities, the world as we want it, and as we find it But one day a manifesto comes along that reconciles both in every pledge. A rare moment of clarity and hope

One of the things I love about Stephen Colbert is that the guy is just a great entertainer, well trained at Northwestern. He would probably do jokes and sing and dance super well for an audience of 20.

this is the closest I've ever come to actually suggesting a "one neat trick" suggestion for anything, but I'm so serious here. the Virginia Constitution gives the legislature the power to set retirement ages for judges "REGARDLESS OF THE TERM TO WHICH ELECTED OR APPOINTED." make it 54 right now.

In our senior seminar at VT we hosted Maureen O'Donnell, the @chicago.suntimes.com obituary writer, who talked about researching and writing obituaries. Then Reagan went out and researched and wrote such a good one, talking to family members and finding tons of details on Kahen's early life.

One of the pieces of my students' writing I am most proud of: an obituary for Harold Kahen, who helped the NAACP defeat covenants in a 1948 U.S. Supreme Court challenge. He died six years ago at age 101 and had just a one-sentence obituary. www.chicagocovenants.com/blog/z06l44s...

Under the "hold" scenario, you stay in the neighborhood you have known and can afford the payment for and maybe clean a couple extra rooms every couple weeks. I cannot tell if this is a reporter fishing for some perennial complainers (found em!) or people for whom $3 million is simply not enough.

"For example, if a California home was purchased in 1997 for $500,000 and sells for $4 million today, that homeowner would likely owe around $1 million in taxes." Also wild how bad people are at arithmetic. Under the "sell" scenario, you end up with $3 million dollars and can move where you please
