The modern research ecosystem of online tools and communities is controlled by for-profit companies. But we think that researchers should be the priority - not the product. So, we're announcing Aster ID: not-for-profit Atmosphere account hosting for researchers.

Been thinking about this a fair amount recently (especially as I’ve been doing a bunch of proposal writing and such) - how even mundane writing tells you something about the person who wrote it.

I've been gesturing towards the idea that: 1. Groups can be smarter than individuals 2. Proven in other fields and species 3. Social protocols + sensemaking make it buildable I'm trying to gather papers, books, etc that lend precedent or otherwise support the idea Open contributions via @semble.so

It was a joy to chat with Ronen, get some insight into the direction Cosmik and co are going, and explore all the shared vision we have (which only seemed to increase as we went!). Also inspired some exciting concepts for the future of participatory research (including with @atproto.science!)

So sad this isn’t universal. Instead: * I have to choose to either get a bunch of content in my feed I don’t want to get the bits I really want to see from someone * Multiple channels on YouTube is a thing * Discovery of my own stuff is worse * Poor access to circles of trust and identity

I do love the classic formulation of “naming things, cache invalidation, and off by one errors”, but if you think about it they’re all communication problems 😛 For real though, this is such an important part of what we do!

Just thinking about this again these past two days The exact same game can succeed or fail based on whether the people jumping in are getting the game they expected A lot of the wrong players -- players that won't like it -- jumping in to play is really gonna color perception of that game.

IMO a tragedy of AI’s trajectory (amongst other complicated feelings I have) is that it theoretically has the potential to be powerful as a tool for play, but the reality is contrary

My heart is so full tonight at this concert. Amazing music, and especially a joy to get to chat with the group. Haven’t smiled like this in ages, I so needed that. 🙂

My obsession for a decade: Parts of games are real, not fiction. Like, you are not really becoming a powerful knight when you gain a virtual level. That's fiction, fantasy. But you DO gain real skills. In manipulating buttons, game tactics etc. In multiplayer games, the friendships are real.

I wrote an article about dialogue choice as part of a narrative designer’s toolkit *aside* from branching, instead considering how choice can invite us to *perform* a character. My case study is South of Circle’s beautiful fuzzy meaning-making (using symbols instead of words). 💜 Give it a go!

This idea of trying to simulate a thematic concept rather than just treating it as aesthetics closely mirrors a comment I’ve heard and made multiple times in serious games: make the thing you’re applying games/play to *the game itself*.

Seeing Sonic Pi pop up in a come of posts has me thinking about multi-modal interfaces again. What if a DAW let you seamlessly switch to a text-based editing paradigm (akin to changing between staff and piano roll)? Are there edits that would be easier to make/represent?

A compelling project presented by Shaun Foster of a VR experience allowing you to try out usage of a 19th century printing press. Love how this allows for experiencing something normally out of reach (unlikely you’d have access to try out a tool like this in depth IRL!). #seriousplay25
