Call me a pessimist but I don't think it's possible to eliminate sexual violence because I don't think it's possible to eliminate violence. I do, however, think it is possible to destigmatize surviving sexual violence and give survivors all the resources they need to not just heal but thrive.

I feel like people think if we say "rape/DV are things you can heal from" we're saying "so it's no big deal if someone rapes you," which is NUTS. You can heal from a broken leg! It still fucking sucks to break your leg and you shouldn't break other people's legs!

I don't wish sexual assault or IPV or any form of abuse on anyone, the same way I don't wish a broken leg or cancer or mental illness on anyone, but I also don't think that people who live with any of these realities are somehow permanently ruined the way people talk about SA/DV survivors.

I don't think preventing rape is a particularly easy task either. What *is* manageable, however, is creating a society that doesn't shame survivors and gives them easy access to support and healing resources.
