Chloe rolled over onto her stomach, one hand questing for Lucifer on its own. She was only partially awake, most of her mind caught up in the haze of some random dream she was already forgetting, and she wasn’t willing to give that up just yet. She was too comfortable, some part of her aware that she didn’t have to get up early today, and so she wanted to drift off again.

Her hand found Lucifer’s arm and closed around it. There. She settled that much more, her brief thoughts already quieting—

“Good morning, love.”

His voice broke through it all, drawing her back to consciousness more than she liked. “Mmm.” She really thought she didn’t have to get up yet. Maybe he’d take the hint and let her sleep…

She felt him shifting on the mattress, and then his lips were pressing against her temple. “You can sleep a while longer. I’ll be downstairs.”

“Mkay,” she mumbled, and a moment later, her hand was on its own again. She sighed, curling her arm into the covers instead. Her brain didn’t seem to mind, though, because she didn’t even hear the door close before she was dozing off again. It was nice.

The next thing she knew, cool air was hitting her bare back as the covers slowly slid away. She made some garbled noise of protest, trying to burrow back into the covers. Almost immediately, Lucifer’s lips were on her skin again, just below her neck. “Chloe, love,” he murmured. He placed a trail of kisses down her spine as he moved the covers away, one hand caressing her side, replacing the warmth she’d been missing. That felt nice, too. She stopped squirming. “Happy birthday.”

She smiled, finally opening her eyes. Right. Today was her birthday, which explained why she was getting such a lovely wakeup call this morning. Not that he ever needed the excuse.

“Are you awake now?” he asked, still slowly pulling the covers down. She could feel his smile against her skin.

“No,” she said. “You’ll have to keep going.”

He laughed once, low and soft. “I was going to do that anyway.”

Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?
Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.
