Okay I broke my promise about no longer posting about PPWR/EPR...but good news! The official FAQ was updated with a flowchart that confirms us small EU-based artists are NOT liable as producers. FAQ here: environment.ec.europa.eu/publications...

A flow chart showing information on transport packaging. The first step is Company A manufactures unbranded cardboard boxes for transport (mailing). Then arrows go to four options, which all means Company A remains the responsible producer. The options are: Sells to end user (customer) in another member state, sells to end user in the same member state, sells to Company B (i.e. a self-employed artist or small business) in the same member state, or the cardboard boxes carry the name or trademark of Company B located in the same member, but company B is a micro-enterprise. Company B is shown to only be the producer if they have trademarked packages and they are not a micro-enterprise (i.e. Amazon).

I’ve thought long and hard about making this post, but really, at this point, I don’t have much to lose. Desperate times, and all that.

TLDR version: I need a kidney transplant, and I’m looking for a donor. Read below for all the gory details.

Since late 2019, right before Covid hit, I’ve been battling a serious illness. I’ve been kind of cagey about what exactly is wrong, for a number of reasons, but here’s the truth—I’m in full kidney failure.

There is no history of this in my family, so when the symptoms began appearing I didn’t recognize them until it was too late. By the time I went to a doctor my kidney function had dropped into the single digits. Most kidney failure is caused by diabetes or high blood pressure—I got some weird kidney disease I can’t even pronounce and never heard of: Oxalate Nephropathy.

By adopting some dietary changes and careful monitoring, I was able to limp along with reduced kidney function for several years. But you don’t appreciate how much your kidneys do to keep you healthy until they stop working. There’s constant fatigue and nausea, and a general feeling of unwellness that never goes away.

But eventually I lost even what minimal function I had left, which left the end of the line for kidney disease: dialysis. As of this point I’ve been on dialysis for about 3 years. Let me tell you—dialysis is its own special kind of hell that you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy.

But even that is just a stop-gap measure, and my condition is continuing to get worse. Despite this, I’m trying my best to live as normal a life as possible. I’m extremely lucky I have a job that’s willing to allow me 9 hours a week for dialysis, so I’m still working. On weekends I work on my art and comics, and one or two days a month I do my volunteer work at the bird-banding site. I can even travel to see my family—if I arrange for dialysis at a local clinic ahead of time.

All of that is done while trying to deal with the symptoms of kidney failure. I’ve known 4 people who were on dialysis—none of them worked or really did much of anything, and at this point they’re all dead, which doesn’t really give me a lot of hope for my future.

Which brings us to the point of all this—I desperately need a kidney transplant. That is the only thing that will give me a chance at a relatively normal life. I’ve been approved and on the transplant list for a few years, but the waiting period in California is very long. By the time I get to the top of it, I may be too sick to get one. Right now I’m still in relatively good condition, comparatively. A transplant from a living donor lasts much longer and is better in every way than one you get from a deceased donor.

Unfortunately, everyone in my immediate family is too old or has other health problems that preclude donation. So this post is a desperate attempt to find anyone willing to donate. I realize donating a kidney is a lot different than giving ten bucks to a GoFundMe, but as I said at the beginning, at this point I don’t have much to lose by asking.

I don't even know how to start this post. I'm sitting here crying as I type this.

On Monday June 1st, my fiancé's dad urged me to call 911 because his mom stopped breathing. I did. I tried to hold it together in that moment because someone had to. But I haven't been okay since.

She was only in at-home hospice for a few days. It happened so fast. Firefighters and EMS showed up, then a police officer, then hospice. We waited hours more for the people to come and take her. I just kept standing in the kitchen or sitting in a chair with everything that had just happened. It was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life.

And now I'm reliving the grief of losing my own mom back in 2020, all over again. Grief doesn't stack neatly. It collides. And right now I feel like I'm being crushed under the weight of both.

His mom, Patty, was an incredible woman. She was the rock of their family. She fought an aggressive cancer far longer than anyone knew, never complained, never wanted to be a burden. Even on her last day, she was still cracking jokes and saying sorry for needing help. We donated her body to United Tissue Network so that even in death, she might help someone else live. That's who she was.

But her passing has left us completely devastated both emotionally AND financially. She was helping keep things afloat before her cancer took over. Now we are scrambling to cover rent, utilities, and basic bills while we are barely
