Next week at the anti-conference »Scheitern in den #DigitalHumanities« in Berlin, I’ll present a living pendulum on the #Mutzenbacher authorship question and reconstruct the largely public debate about it between @rebsim.bsky.social, @massimosalgaro.bsky.social and me (earlier also Murray G. Hall).
A slide showing two playing cards for two possible authors of the Mutzenbacher novel: Felix Salten and Ernst Klein. The playing cards include some basic information about the two, such as their dates of birth and death and their professions.

(Vergeschlechtlichtes) Personifizieren does not do it for me. 🧵

A point that Kim Hyeon's keynote at #DH2026 rightfully raises, in my view, even if implicitly, is the need for the field to finally drill down on our use of terminology like 'knowledge' (data, information). Made more urgent by adoption of AI (terminology), already a desideratum before.

Sappho Digital grew out of a dissertation project and years of research – including an anthology on the subject. It models knowledge about the literary reception of Sappho using formal ontologies, making it an exemplary use case for digital reception studies – and the literary semantic web. 4/6

These texts quote Sappho’s work, incorporate her as a character, draw on biographical theories and legends, and weave an intertextual web with other reception documents. And right now, literary Sappho reception in the German-speaking world is experiencing a remarkable surge. 3/6

Over the centuries, the poems of the ancient Greek poet Sappho have been praised, cited, and – like her persona – creatively reimagined. German-language literary history is no exception: 1,000+ literary texts bear witness to a productive literary reception of Sappho. 2/6
