Only previous time I heard criticism of union representation on the BoE board was a Socialist Workers Party activist calling Dave Prentice a sell out. Antipathy towards this tradition shared with Badenoch’s Tories perhaps illustrative of a shared distance from the political centre

Jfc there is still a trade union presence in about half the workplaces in the country. U gotta be so wildly ignorant & incurious of working lives to not appreciate the insights the BoE will gain from this appointment

the prospect of a vast proportion of the wealth generated being used by musk to fuel a race war across the globe would be a considerable negative externality. I wonder how UK investors have incorporated this into calculations of the value opportunity 🤔

Some of the proposals in the consultation on Modernising Corporate Reporting, published by the UK Government last week, are misconceived. They will make it much harder to build a fairer, greener, more prosperous economy. Short blog on LinkedIn lnkd.in/p/eVezq9D7

The Government is planning to abolish requirements for companies (including some of the UK's biggest employers) to publish CEO to worker pay gaps, & report on their pay & employment practices. Pretty vital info for unions & responsible investors. Surprising that a Labour govt is proposing this

We can't build the much-desired 'economy that works for everybody' if savers have no say in investment and stewardship decisions that affect our lives & involve capital we provide Catherine's recommendations include member assemblies, pension scheme AGMs, transparency on how our shares get voted.

Auto-enrolment quietly made 23m+ workers into owners of investment capital worth trillions but with no say in how it's stewarded or voted - Fewer than 50 trustees now oversee more than half of all DC pension assets Addressing this democratic deficit should be a priority for a progressive government

It’s debatable whether the Syrian leader at the time the War on Terror began was even of a truly Islamic faith, never mind an Islamist. The current regime may be preferable to Assad but totally mad to say the WoT has weakened Islamism in Syria

Rather than being ideological, trusts & foundations are obsessed with evidence & impact (sometimes to the point of being quite bureaucratic/risk averse) His real gripe to is that the evidence tends to lead to policy solutions that would reduce the wealth & power of people like Brian Armstrong

in areas like corporate governance, financial services/investment industry reform they've not only not been left wing, but have moved rightward from the tories in many ways. probly more for policy/think tank dork perceptions than the general public, but some of this does filter through

Total household wealth in the UK is closer to £15tn & the top 1% hold just under 1/4, though this still implies lower revenue from a wealth tax. Most expert proponents tend to suggest around £20bn iirc
