...an 800 page biog is incongruous for a man who rarely exceeded 100 pages in his novels. It's a great biog in many ways, but...here's the rub: Even with a shit ton of redneck gun play, bad behaviour, and alcoholism; a writers life is quite dull. Stick to the novels and poetry.

Finally finished William Hortsberg' monster 800 plus page Richard Brautigan biog ' Jubilee Hitchhiker.' I love Brautigan's best writing, but what have I learned? Why have I spent 3 months reading this insane biography?

Just seen the excellent @lukehaines.bsky.social power trio at the Portland Arms in Cambridge. Superb show. Lots of great songs about british wrestlers, and 70s kids TV. And even a few classic Auteurs songs thrown in for good measure.

I once did a painting of an RNLI lifeboat. It was on 'the news'. I was about 7. Have we really got to the point where arseholes are trying to depict the RNLI as bad guys. Steve Ignorant ( crass, good dude) is an RNLI man.

Re last post. The singles reviews catch the temperature of the times. I.e that Buzzcocks review which criticizes them for sticking to a formula when they'd only been in the singles charts for less than a year at the time.

Most of the writing in the old music weeklies hasn't stood the test of time. The only thing that reads well are the singles review pages. Here's a typical one:

Where i'm at: I've only just found out that Grian Chatton is in Fontaines DC. I am very cynical about old folks liking Charli XCX ( including you John Cale). I have no interest in Tyla The Creator. I think Kneecap are silly. And I think that Lieutenant Pigeon are better than Nick Cave.

Saints preserve us. The woeful casting of this Beatle biopic may kill off the retro Beatle industry for a decade. There is no great rock biopic... perhaps the Buddy Holly Story with Gary Busey.

Copping flak from the rock grandads today. I don't write those old angsty Auteurs songs anymore. I was 25. I'm 58. I do what I want. Do you? Still scrapping it out for 200 words and £50? If you like the old angsty stuff you could get into BBR - like the kids (200 mil streams and counting, dad)

Floyd were good up until and including the ridiculous ( but great) Ummugumma. Wish You Were Here is fab, but I regard it as the third Syd solo album. Syd was such a magician that he didn't even need to appear on it. His spirit just consumes it. That's genius. #lukehaineshasopinions.

I'm not really down with the prog reappraisal. The good stuff was great: Van Der Graf (PH told me they weren't prog they were part of 'the underground) Genesis, until Pete fucked off and became a 'world music' yuppie. The rest was weak public school namby pamby nonsense.

I don't have a dog in the race but here are a few post England out pluses: My half wit neighbour has taken his moronic flag down in a strop. You don't have to hear Wonderwall unless you want to. Andy Burnham has been saved from saying something moronic about football. Britpop #2 has been averted.
