To the Rolling Stone writer who’s mad because people have never heard of Choosin’ Texas, where was all that energy when radio stations were refusing to play Cowboy Carter? Or when Billboard removed Old Town Road from the Hot Country Songs chart because it wasn’t “country enough?”

Perusing through my old Rolling Stone magazines and caught up to this little capsule review of The Nice Guys in a 2016 issue and man Peter Travers must have woke up on the wrong side of the bed that day.

2 Broke Girls. What a waste of Garrett Morris! And Jennifer Coolidge. And Eric Andre. And the many talented people who guested on the show. And Peter, Björn and John. And the CBS television network. And my free time. And the concept of laughter. And my university’s electricity. And Philo Farnsworth.

Trying to offset some timeline negativity by asking this question.: What is a movie that you like that many don’t? For me, there’s a few answers, but I’ll say George of the Jungle (1997). It’s a goofy, fun sendup of Tarzan pictures with a strong ensemble cast. Also, that poster is terrific.

It happens with every generation. Teenage beatnik: “Say pops! What is this unhip music? This jive is total squaresville daddy-o!” Older man: “It’s Bing Crosby. It came out in 1942.” Beatnik: “1942?! Man, check out this cat. He’s a geezer chickie baby. (Draws square with fingers.) Let’s shake it!”

I have found something to like in pretty much every music genre, even, to my continuous disbelief, nü-metal. (What can I say? Korn’s Got the Life is a banger.) There are two genres however that are complete musical detritus: crunkcore and screamo.

I hope this is the wrong answer.:

Two students, Melody and Howie, stare apprehensively between themselves and their new teacher, Mrs. Jeepers. They are not sure if she’s a vampire, but she certainly does wear polka dots.

It feels weird to say because it’s got people in it and elements about it that I like, but I think Barbie (2023) is just fine. I enjoy Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and the production design. I just don’t think it was one of the best 10 films of that year or that it should’ve been up for Best Picture.

I was inadvertently reminded of the Lunch Dances held at the New York Public Library this Spring and even though the performing arts are an integral part of my DNA, doing so in a space devoted to quiet reading and research in the 2nd most populous city in North America sounds ill-advised at best.

One thing that I have come to appreciate over the years of watching and rewatching episodes of Siskel and Ebert is that Gene Siskel was not the stuffed shirt critic who didn’t like commercial, non-artsy movies that many make him out to be.

Happy Birthday to one of the great animated movies, and also the first Studio Ghibli movie I ever watched, Spirited Away (2001)! I wouldn’t say it’s my absolute favourite (Here’s looking at you my beloved Kiki’s Delivery Service and Porco Rosso!), but it’s for sure one of Miyazaki’s best.

Did a rewatch of Roger Ebert’s Best and Worst of 1999 episodes and Rog could not win with the other critics and Magnolia. Janet Maslin wasn’t completely sold on it. Joel Siegel said it lost him with an hour to go. Joyce Kulhawik said she didn’t understand what it was trying to say.

Does anybody still enjoy watching There’s Something About Mary (1998)? Has it been entirely lost to the dustbin of film history, or is there still a small audience for that Farrelly Brothers brand of humour? I still find certain parts funny, despite some dated scenes and jokes.

Rewatched this yesterday and they were spot on about it. The fact that they liked this movie and not the prestigiously-cast, pedigree civil rights legal drama Ghosts of Mississippi still blows my mind. Sometimes you just need a movie that allows you to turn your brain off for an hour and a half.

🦖 Sam Neill was one of those actors I admired gradually over time. The first movie I saw him in was The Jungle Book (1994) where he played the father of Mowgli’s friend and eventual love interest Kitty. I then saw Jurassic Park as a preteen and it was exactly as great as I thought it would be.

Hearing the first performance of a great piece of art. Being in a grand concert hall and hearing the first performance of Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven himself would bring me to tears. Seeing the original production of The Nutcracker and thinking “People are going to love this 70 years from now.”
