Had a great time musing about cold-weather clothes and other portable environments for the #UMN alumni association last week. Here’s the recording!

Future in Focus Webinar: The Science of Clothing
What if clothing could do more than clothe us? In this engaging webinar, Professor Lucy Dunne from the University of Minnesota’s College of Design and Wearable Technology Lab explores how research, design, and innovation come together to shape the future of apparel. Recently featured by MPRnews for her infant jaundice suit, she'll take us through the process of design, from functionality to wearability, this session highlights how university research is advancing the way we think about, and interact with, what we wear every day.

Throughout my career people have occasionally described my area of expertise as “wearable clothing”. I get why (clothing-based wearables are different from other kinds of wearables), but it always begs the question of what might constitute “non-wearable clothing” 🤷‍♀️😂

Take it from a fashion historian: transgender people have always been here, even before the Civil War. www.washingtonpost.com/history/2025...

This is a sewing pattern. It is also a page from a late 14th century manuscript that is one of two primary sources for an important Icelandic saga (Sturlunga saga), but that was probably not important to the 17th century person who really needed a sewing pattern. #upcycling
Sewing pattern for part of a shirt. It is clearly made from a dark brown manuscript page with small lettering written in two columns.

I think this is the perfect time to start posting about Greenland and the amazing textile Herjolfsnes finds, aye? Greenland is a district of Denmark and was settled by several distinct Inuit cultures in waves from c.2500 BCE to c.1200 CE, plus the Norse settlement late 10th-15th centuries. 🧵1/
Herjolfsnes dresses, which all appear as brown because of the soil conditions. All of them are burial finds of the same settlement
