I love Asimov's Science Fiction and the magazine's editors. I've published many stories in the magazine. I subscribe to the magazine. Despite that, I'm done with the new MRM owners. This statement is BS. The new owners have squandered the goodwill of their magazines' readers, writers, and fans. 1/

This is a result someone else got, and at least it does mention my book as a secondary bullet point ... but the rest is Very Wow. But so confident and detailed! Very convincing! Mostly entirely wrong!
Google AI summary claiming incorrectly that "Daughter, Dreamer, Slayer" has to do with a quote from poet Nikita Gill, or that it might have to do with a couple of anime and manga series.

Google AI summaries are not to be trusted. Case in point: all actual references on the web to "Daughter, Dreamer, Slayer" point to my forthcoming novel. And yet the AI summaries related to searches on that title have been confidently and completely wrong for days.
Screencap of Google's AI claiming my novel is a Buffy tagline.Google's AI claiming my forthcoming adult horror book is actually a YA novel from a different author.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Out of curiosity, where are you seeing that he has published novels? There's nothing about that on his website, and I'm not getting any hits on his name at HarperCollins. Or does he have a pseudonym you know about and I don't?

"AI for ADHD Brains at Work: New Ways to Support Executive Function
Date & Time: Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at 1pm EDT
(12pm Central; 11am Mountain; 10am Pacific)
Find it in your time zone »
Expert: Diann Wingert, MSW
WEBINAR SPONSOR: Inflow
Adults with ADHD are positively bursting with ideas, ambition, or effort. In short supply, often, are executive functioning skills. For decades, the standard advice has been to borrow someone else’s EFs — a body double, an assistant. Now, artificial intelligence (AI) can fill in gaps for a fraction of the cost, at any hour, and without judgment.

Yes, AI is controversial and has its downsides for sure. But with the right prompts and strategy, it has the potential to be life-changing. This webinar will offer a practical, hype-free framework for using AI as an executive function support. Attendees will learn which tasks AI handles well, and which ones it doesn’t. It will also address the questions thoughtful users should be asking about privacy, accuracy, and over-reliance."

Sketchy workshops, conferences, and retreats. Shady agencies and book promoters. Self publishing "cooperatives" that turn out to be ripoffs. Reputable publishers who take a heel turn out of greed or desperation and start cooking their books. And in the past few years, everything AI.

There all kinds of borderline and outright scams to be found in publishing. Newbies get preyed on ... but established, well-intentioned creators can easily become accomplices to unethical, predatory operations if they're not paying attention and doing their research before they agree to a gig.

So, the hustle is a given: you gotta push and keep pushing your career up that hill. Most of the time, nobody else will do it for you. But sometimes, for some creators, that hustle can turn into the *other* kind of hustle.

The business tells us that we have to self-promote in a way that a lot of us who are shy or neurodivergent can just never quite get comfortable with. Unfortunately, pushing past your own comfort level there can train you to ignore your own conscience on anything else related to making a living.

I've been thinking of something tangential to all that. Unless we have a loved one supporting us, or get very lucky and land on the bestseller lists, we freelancers really have to grind to make a living. We're always having to throw a bunch of spaghetti at the wall, income-wise, to see what sticks.

My biggest frustration with writing is that quite often, the SWOOP that takes a book from midlist to BIG DEAL is pure luck, and I personally can't do anything to make it happen. Publishing is not a meritocracy. It's skill + time + luck, and all you can do is be in position for possible liftoff.
