“Boston Lying-In Hospital” decorations. A stork and some weird Della Robbia-style bébés. The hospital I was born in also has a stork on it (though it’s not a maternity hospital). Such a weird, pervasive piece of mythology.
Yellow brick wall of building, with windows and some applied relief sculptures: a stork, and three standing babies wrapped in fabric. Closer view of the stork relief. Closer view of one of the roundels with the creepy babies.

Looking for lunch in one of Boston’s hospital-lands and came across this unsettling AI menu at a turkish-mexican döner kebab joint. The food is all very … orderly.
Chicken Burrito Wrap. The fillings are cubes and slices and other things. The tortilla is … not. Chicken Doner/
Shawarma/Gyro Bowl with precisely cubed and sliced and arranged vegetables and a pile of meat bits. Falafel -Vegatables Plate with perfectly diced vegetables that looks like a mis en place ready for cooking and 5 disc-shaped falafels Chicken pita wrap with precisely cubed chicken and vegetable pieces, wrapped in a cylinder of something vaguely tortilla colored?

Jackie Jackson died two days ago. His death did not get the fanfare that the big celebrities get but I assure you he was no less than any of them: a titan astride the earth. In this thread, a few of the songs he played bass on. You know these songs. You know their bass parts. youtu.be/DKVB_CtU8XQ

It would be so good if people organizing these events would talk with attendees about the need for them to attend school and library board meetings AND IMPORTANTLY for people to seek appointment or election to both these boards. Power-building and governance matter.

Batshit job listing, in the grand tradition of NYFA’s job board. I love the repeated use of “family office” as an attempt at an insider signal, or something. Also, I’ve basically done this job. The differences here are a matter of degree, not kind. 😒🙄

Hackers Had A Live Feed Of Every ID This Verification Company Scanned. For Over A Year.
From the very beginning of this recent obsession with identifying everyone online (yes, they like to call it "age" verification, but it always ends up as identity verification), we've been pointing out that it was a huge privacy nightmare waiting to happen. Or maybe it wasn't waiting. Maybe it was already happening. This week a...

Fallen type at the Huntington, in the library’s Damaged Goods show. @jaymoschella.bsky.social
Full leaf from a book, printed in 2 columns. Below is an exhibition label:

Three leaves from a Bible Ulm, Germany: Johann Zainer,
1480
This work reveals not only the experimental nature of printing with movable type but also a printer who was so careless that an entire book was written about him.
The leaf here shows a variety of mistakes, including poor inking. The most noticeable offense is the two pieces of type, one in each column, that fell from the form during printing, leaving their imprints on top of the other types.
When handled correctly, the type would have been strung up on wires to hold it in place, which is indicated by the visible hole in the block.

Cannot get these muffins to brown on top unless I overbake them. Tried top rack, don’t want to try sugar on top. The muffins are dairy free, so no milk sugars to brown, and not much other sugar either (old school Fannie Farmer recipe). *grumble* At least they taste good?

Outstanding dark pattern here. Not pleased by how long it took me to realize there are in fact 2 buttons. (My phone settings probably didn’t help - I keep night shift on 24/7, and the screen brightness fairly low, too.)

A spectacular bibliophilic souvenir: book box opening to reveal opera glasses and a pillbox. Published in Vienna in the 1880s, the books themselves are by Enlightenment philosopher Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, author of the Laocoön. More in today’s short list: www.honeyandwaxbooks.com/pdfs/Jul2026...
[DESIGN]. Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's Werke (book box). Vienna: Verlag von Sigmund Bensinger, 1880s. Box carved out of two hollowed octavo volumes, exterior dimensions 10.5 x 7.5 x 2.5 inches. Full chestnut morocco elaborately stamped in black and gilt with central gilt portrait of Lessing on upper board serving as box lid, secured by a pair of green silk ribbons. Interior finished with gilt title “Milano,” marbled paper trim, and color-printed pictorial onlay. Two purpose-built compartments housing a pair of mother-of-pearl opera glasses and a circular blue and white monogrammed floral pillbox. Lightest shelfwear to edges and spine panels.

Decorative box fashioned out of two converted books, opening to reveal a pair of opera glasses and a small porcelain pillbox. Originally published in Vienna, the hollowed books themselves are two handsomely bound volumes of the works of German Enlightenment philosopher Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, author of the Laocoön. The interior of the books is lined with a portrait of two herald angels, heightened in gilt, under the heading “Moderne Kunst.” Fitted compartments house a pair of opera glasses in iridescent brown mother-of-pearl and a floral box for pills or pastilles, monogrammed with a Gothic letter “G.” A spectacular bibliophilic souvenir.

This is the correct answer. When an institution has a bunch of "expired" N95s, the protocol is to distribute 2, to account for the increased likelihood the elastic breaks when putting one on. The filter material will remain effective for many years

I assumed the exp dates were more about the elastic bands than the mask/filter itself, so I would say as long as it still fits you tightly, it’s probably okay? (and unlike with wearing it to prevent disease transmission, it might not be essential that it fit exactly as tightly as before it expired)

So, like, does anyone have info handy on what expiration dates on masks/respirators mean? If I have some KF95s that expired a year or two ago, is it still ok to use them in a pinch for something like shitty air quality?
