It's the mindless violence of predators who think everyone wants blood and gore, and that the masses will be entertained by needless brutality and fearmongering.

What we're doing here is harkening back to a feudal era and attempting to bring back the senseless violence of ye olden times for no good reason.

If you want to execute Hasan, that's a stance that's gonna be hard for a lot of people on the fence about the death penalty to push back against given the specifics of the Fort Hood shooting. But what Trump and Hegseth want is a return to an era of barbarism and unnecessary, unjustified cruelty.

This will not deter further violence, put the fear of God into Muslim extremists, or do any of the things that people could use as justification for the return of televised public executions.

There's no good argument for the execution of Nidal Hasan to be public and/or by firing squad. This is being done solely to glorify state-sanctioned violence.

Off the top of my head, 17 Again, Pixel Perfect, and How to Build a Better Boy, are all examples of this very silly genre.

My favorite genre of kids' movies is "A child scientist casually invents something/does something with some experimental tech that would permanently alter human civilization if it was made commercially available".

And there's not a single person in the Republican Party who has even a fraction of his approval ratings and backing. Advertising against him is a waste.

The "No Going Back" pac ads in NC are so funny because they are like "Roy Cooper wasn't perfect! He did politics, sometimes! Don't let him back into office!" and allow me to tell you that Roy Cooper is the only real person who deserves a Senate seat in this state that isn't already in office.

also there is nowhere in the convention that it suggests that you identify a genocide by counting the dead or percentage of dead. you can have genocides through theft of children in which no one dies, as just one counterexample.

That doesn't show me much. Don't how just show me places like that. Show me crowds in Lagos, Rio de Janeiro, Cairo, and in small towns or, the funnier options, like in remote fishing villages, the Amazon, the Artic Circle, and more.

In a scene near the end of The Martian they want to show the audience that "the world" is watching the final space mission. So they show crowds in China, New York, and London.

It sometimes seems like they'll throw a few extra people into wide shots as a prank, and if you call them on it, they'll try to gaslight you. I am joking, but like... I'm not COMPLETELY sure if I'm wrong.

Jessica and I remain convinced that some reality shows like to toss in random people as "competitors" in whatever show is going on (Hell's Kitchen, Master Chef, Survivor, The Bachelor) to see if the audience has been paying attention.

Dems should introduce the Dolly Parton Memorial Act, making the right to do drag a federal law

The deaths of Dolly and Tim are enormous bummers but the reaction to them serves as a sobering reminder of the fact that even today it's possible to live a life that touches millions, or even billions, of people, and be remembered in death graciously, empathetically, and kindly.

Lucianowrites @lucianowrites.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
They'll be moved to tears. There's definitely deaths to come (in the royal "The only things guaranteed in life are death and taxes sense) that will provoke... a very different reaction.

Lucianowrites @lucianowrites.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
This is a WILD departure from how people have reacted to other deaths. It's a curious reminder that if you're actually beloved, if you're a kind, thoughtful person who makes the world a better place, people will miss you. They will celebrate your life.

Lucianowrites @lucianowrites.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
People have had fun with it but neither celebrity has been the subject of mocking, scorn, or elation, the fun people have had with both deaths have been people celebrating the lives of two thoughtful, kind, hopeful humans who made celebrity better, kinder, and happier.

And above it all, she was as well-known for her kindness and charity as she was for her music. Without her the American music industry will feel less kind, less sincere, and less giving. What a grievous loss.

Dolly Parton is dead. That's... Damn, dude. Dolly Parton was a heroine, a legend, an icon of kindness, class in the least annoying sense of the term, and of grace. Her music is what many hear in their minds when they first think of country music.

Remember to actively apply skepticism and thoughtfulness rather than just assume your big brain will automatically put everything through a lens that includes critical thinking and appropriate skepticism.

You can be smart and not have a disciplined mind or a thoughtful framework through which to view the world.

Lucianowrites @lucianowrites.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Smarter people than you or I have been tricked and people less smart than both of us have caught, called out, and stymied scammers and bad ideas.
120
Lucianowrites @lucianowrites.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
This is why intelligent, robust thinkers can still fall victim to scams. You have to exercise critical thinking. You have to train your mind to consistently, thoughtfully, immediately put critical thinking to work.
120
Lucianowrites @lucianowrites.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Critical thinking skills are skills. They are not natural facets of having a big, juicy, smart brain. Plenty of very intelligent people lack critical thinking skills and there are many folks who are not smart who understand how to think critically.

People have NOT made it easy, but I've filed paperwork and the like, sometimes FOUR times, and the payoff has been ridiculous. But man medical debt blows.

Lucianowrites @lucianowrites.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Medical debt has absolutely rocked my shit man, but with this I'm nearly done. It feels insane to have had so much forgiven. I've paid some of it off myself but the VAST majority of this is just me applying for forgiveness and getting it. Wild.

Lucianowrites @lucianowrites.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
For months I've been stuck in a quiet war with medical debt people following my stay in a hospital in February. Through medical debt forgiveness programs and the like I was able to reduce a debt that was, in total, over 23K to an amount that, as of today, equals less than 2,000 dollars.

It will take active, conscious effort to stop Trump from running again in 2028, and every time he "jokes" about this he's testing the waters. It is on the sum totality of the American electorate to make those waters untenable for him.
120
Lucianowrites @lucianowrites.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
Trump is a symptom of the right-wing's vulnerability to machismo, and it is in moments like this that we see that vulnerability become a problem for the rest of the country.

And we cannot count on the Republican Party to suddenly grow a backbone when for my entire life it's been the refuge of cowards and would-be-tyrants in equal measure and the two are dangerous when allowed to pal around together.

Trump is talking about a third term, again (he made jokes at the White House Correspondents Dinner). Take this shit seriously. If pressed on it he'd do the conservative back-pedal and say "Oh I'm just joking, is humor illegal now?!" but there's a real shot he's not joking.

Its a simple, consistent principle that does not deny that humans are humans while refusing to treat pregnant people as secondary to what is gestating inside of them.

Focusing on consent allows for the creation of an ethical framework that makes it so that abortion is permissible for the same reason as mandatory organ donation isn't.
110
Lucianowrites @lucianowrites.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
If I thought that abortion hinged on a fetus not crossing a nebulous point in its existence that magically bestowed it humanity and personhood then it'd be difficult for me to argue against something like mandatory organ donation, because people in need of organs are... as it turns out, people.
110
Lucianowrites @lucianowrites.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
This doesn't require anything goofy like saying a fetus is a parasite or insisting that it's not a person.
110
Lucianowrites @lucianowrites.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
The only justification abortion will ever need is that someone is not entitled to your body without your consent and that consent can be taken away at any time for any reason. This is the same basic principle that allows for the withdrawing of consent during sexual encounters.
120
Lucianowrites @lucianowrites.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
You don't need to dehumanize a fetus to be able to articulate an ethical stance that supports bodily autonomy. Abortion is ethical and you don't have to use negative lines of reasoning to arrive at that position.
120
Lucianowrites @lucianowrites.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
I'm 1,000% pro-choice. I support abortions all the way to term. I'm so pro-choice it isn't inaccurate to call me pro-abortion. And all that said I do think that calling a fetus a parasite or saying it isn't a person are bad lines of argumentation.

The explanations that make the most sense are that the missionaries are weird Christians like Mormons, or that the missionaries don't view Catholics as Christians. Which is a dumb but common attitude.
010
Lucianowrites @lucianowrites.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
I am cognizant of missionaries who volunteer but in that case they should just volunteer and like go to local churches rather than framing their trips as MISSION trips first and foremost. It's weird.
