Happy Thanksgiving. My son just bought a project car, so I’m apparently a car guy now not a #woodworking guy anymore. It was nice knowing you all.

Hey @nickofferman.bsky.social congratulations on Little Woodchucks! I snagged a ticket for the Des Moines book tour stop, so hopefully I’ll be able to say hi. But if you’re in town a bit early I’d be happy to give you the nickel tour of the WOOD magazine shops. sites.prh.com/little-woodc...

Been a while since they let me write an article for this magazine I’m supposedly in charge of. But, I got in a solid stretch of prop making and studio time this week working on a fun little CNC technique. #woodworking #CNC #woodmagazine

Shipping the files off to the printer for the July issue of WOOD magazine. The cover article is a nice little head-to-head compact cordless mitersaw test. Here is a collection of detail shots that you will never see in the magazine, but show you the detail our testers dive into.
A detail shot of a testing procedure for a cordless mitersaw showing how much sawdust was left behind after cutting when using the saw's dust bag. The label "Milwaukee" is marked on a scrap of wood and a placard reading "On Table With Bag" sits next to the saw denoting how much sawdust remained on the worksurface after the cut.A detail shot of a testing procedure for a cordless mitersaw showing how much sawdust was left behind after cutting when using the saw's dust bag. Working on releasing some free woodworking plans into the wild. Here's one for a pencil-post Shaker-style bed. It uses a fun jig for making tapers on 8' legs. Enjoy! www.woodmagazine.com/project-plan...
Elegant Shaker-style pencil-post bed handcrafted from warm-toned wood, shown in a serene bedroom with soft green walls. The bed features slender tapered posts connected by canopy rails with draped white fabric. A matching wooden dresser and nightstand complete the minimalist, traditional aesthetic.

Editing a hardware cabinet project article for the July issue. Why did the builder choose to leave only the top right bin empty when he propped it? Oh. I see. #woodworking #amediting #easteregg

Is this the best instructional #woodworking video ever made? No. Is it the best I've ever made? Far and away, yes. Sound on.

March 2025 issue of WOOD magazine should be hitting newsstands and mailboxes in about a week-ish. Cover project is a comfy deck chair. Our designer, Kevin, started with the idea of keeping all the things he liked about an Adirondack chair and upgrading everything else. More in comments. #woodworking

Happy Holidays from WOOD magazine! Fun fact: Santa has been on the cover of WOOD 3 times if you only count his photographic appearances. The current Editor-in-Chief? Once. On the Issue 2 cover (1984), Santa is employing poor bandsaw safety practices, but taunting you with all 5 fingers. #woodworking
Classic cover from the November/December 1984 issue of WOOD magazine featuring an image of Santa Claus standing in front of a bandsaw in a workshop turning to face the camera, winking, and holding up an index finger. Safety be damned.

I just realized that I’m working on page proofs of the project sitting directly in front of me. The plans are for the March issue of WOOD. Should be in your hands starting about 1/21 or so. #woodworking #amediting

Time for Assistant Editor Georgie to get to work on page proofs for the March issue of WOOD. As always, he applies minimal effort. #amediting #woodworking
View of laptop displaying a page proof from a woodworking magazine. A Yorkshire terrier poodle mix dog rests his head on the keyboard and looks back at the camera with a slightly reproachful look, as if to say, “I know you’re going to post this picture online and mock my work ethic again. I’ll have you know, I hump your shoes when you leave the room.”

And because it’s apparently been on my mind recently, here are my favorite photos from my summer vacation of my wife.

Hey #woodworking (and #clockmaking) Bluesky: I built this clock some time ago and the one thing that bugs me is the size of the hands. It uses a battery powered high-torque movement and the longest hands on offer for it. Can I fabricate longer hands. How? Out of what? Would the movement tolerate it?

Hey #woodworking Bluesky, anyone build any projects where the wood had some significant or just cool provenance? Went on a family vacation to DC this summer and the only souvenir I felt compelled to buy was a turned mechanical pencil made from cherry wood salvaged from the Capitol grounds.

Here’s one I designed for the laser cutter several years back. Roughly based on the Hoot-Nanny magic designer toy from the 30s. This one was fun.

I'm fascinated by (but bad at) art. (I married an artist.) Obviously interested in #print. (Chased a career in a "dying" medium.) A while back, I mixed the two with my #woodworking to design this little clamshell hand press. The plate hinges on black pipe and the handle levers against the crossbar.
DIY tabletop clamshell hand press made from wood and black pipe sitting open on a table. A linoleum print block sits in the bed. The press is surrounded by printmaking accessories and a stack of paper proofs.DIY tabletop clamshell hand press made from wood and black pipe sitting closed on a table. One of the weird little tasks as EIC is that I get to write up a lot of the little blurby parts of the book that no one reads. Like the TOC. At times, it's liberating because you can say anything you want and nobody complains except the proofreader. Go on. Give me suggestions. #editing #woodworking
Screenshot of Adobe InDesign displaying a draft of the table of contents of WOOD magazine's upcoming March issue that the editor-in-chief is currently working on. There are lots of words in this section of the magazine written by the editor-in-chief which nobody will ever read very closely. Knowing this, he'll often try to sneak in song lyrics or Monty Python references or really bad puns. Mostly people just skim through it or look at the pictures and page numbers before flipping past. The worst pun on this particular page is contained in the entry for a project plan for a picture frame meant to house kids' artwork. The referenced project is basically a two-part frame that stores stacks of drawings behind the selected artwork on display. That way, you're free to change out the drawings and have a place to archive older drawings so you can put off the decision to throw them away. The editor-in-chief began this entry with "Haring today, Gauguin tomorrow?" Which is a particularly bad pun of "Here today, gone tomorrow?" referencing Keith Haring, a contemporary artist and Paul Gauguin a 19th century French post-impressionist painter and sculptor. The editor-in-chief is unduly proud of this pun. He should not be.

These are WOOD magazine's Design Editors, John Olson and Kevin Boyle. John is the designer and builder of the Timber Line Express train plans that we're currently publishing. We cleared off the filing cabinets in our office so he'd have a spot to play with his creation. #woodworking

I'll try not to be too market-y on this platform, but the 300th issue of WOOD is hitting the newsstands. We just passed our 40th anniversary this year as well. This appears to be a fairly print-friendly place, so I'd be grateful if you considered picking up a copy. Some behind-the-scenes in replies.

Frequent question: “Is editor of a woodworking magazine a dream job?” Answer: The view from my desk featuring the bank of monitors I’m trapped behind 99% of my day, the gallery of furniture that I wish I had built, and the fully-equipped dream shop that I rarely have the opportunity to use.

I’m trying to fill my feed with woodworking projects, so I’ll put some out in the world and hope for returns. This is a humidor I made for my neighbor during early days of lockdown. It was tricky to get lumber at the time so I tried to build small to use up scrapwood.
