New paper alert! We image the ionized jet of a protostar, BHR71-IRS1, for the first time! We find neon, argon, cobalt, iron, nickel, sulfur, all launched at >100 km/s from a young star. #JWST #webb

Wow, this is wrong on so many levels. How about we create more safe and stress-free environment so students don't have to use alcohol to feel comfortable there? I agree that just removing social interactions because of alcohol is not solving the problem, but no, drinking more is not the solution.

📌 OTWARTY DOSTEĘP DO TREŚCI „Jedna na milion przestaje być synonimem »rzadkości« jeśli obserwujemy miliardy obiektów”. I to właśnie zaczęło docierać do naukowców z całego świata: wkraczamy w zupełnie nową erę monitorowania nieba. Opisuje i pokazuje Łukasz Tychoniec.

It's paper day! arxiv.org/abs/2412.01895 JWST is studying the molecular contents of the inner regions of protoplanetary discs in unprecented detail, and they turn out to be very varied. Some discs, eg DR Tau, are dominated by emission from water, others, eg GW Lup, are dominated by CO2. But why? 1/6
Two panels showing the JWST Spectrum of DR Tau (a protoplanetary disc) and its decomposition into different molecules as a function of wavelength, from Temmink et al. (2024a). The spectrum shows many sharp spikes corresponding to bright emission lines of water, with some broader underlying variations. Models of emission of different molecules are plotted in different colours at the bottom and their sum as the shaded red region at the top, which is overlaid on the data in black. Two plots showing the JWST Spectrum of GW Lup (a protoplanetary disc) and its decomposition into different molecules as a function of wavelength, from Grant et al. (2023). The clearest feature is a broad triangular shaped bump at ~15 micron resulting from CO2, with some fainter surrounding spikes mostly due to water or CO2. Models of emission of different molecules are plotted in different colours at the bottom and their sum as the shaded red region at the top, which is overlaid on the data in black.

New JWST official release: Webb finds icy complex organic molecules around protostar IRAS 2A in NGC 1333. esawebb.org/news/weic2409/ 🔭 🧪
An international team of scientists using the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has identified a wealth of complex, carbon-containing (organic) molecules surrounding two protostars. This graphic shows the spectrum of one of the two protostars, IRAS 2A. It includes the fingerprints of acetaldehyde, ethanol, methylformate, and likely acetic acid, in the solid phase. These and other molecules detected there by Webb represent key ingredients for making potentially habitable worlds.
