The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Maybe she's trying out for a UCP job like certain past councillors... 020
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Always love the province demanding more traffic and pollution, fewer services, and higher taxes in my neighborhood...not feeling hopeful. 060
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 07/10/2026If you support treating immigrants like everyone else, shouldn't you support more affordable housing in your neighborhood and welcome them in? Or is it just theory that they deserve fair treatment as long as they are somewhere else? 050
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Riding around some of the more "exclusive" areas of #yeg like Parkview and Valleyview, I wonder what the Venn overlap is between true No to the Nine people and restrictive covenant people. 130
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Extension along 111 Ave at 120 st which is intended to block left turns (NB to WB) and hopefully NB jogs to 120 st through Prince Rupert. Still seems to allow SB left turns to EB and SB jogs into Queen Mary Park area. Recommend EXTREME CAUTION crossing 120 st using the E-W MUP infrastructure. 030
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 07/10/2026And bonus #yegbike news for the NW centre area. The Kingsway crossing lights on the 113 st MUP are done so now seamless-ish to go north from downtown to Blatchford. The asphalt holes on the 111 ave route in front of Timmie's are patched, so maybe also the ones further east. And new concrete median 192
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Beautiful afternoon for a #yegbike ride to Hawrelak Park. Can confirm the pumpkin bread is as delightful as the view and the company. Got questions about my No to the Nine sign and spouse's Get to Know Your City: Ride a Bike sign that led to good discussions! 090
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Yeah, not looking to pay a license fee. Just a protest and I probably have enough scrap around to do it. 010
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 06/10/2026I'm thinking about building a platform with wheels and an electric motor on it to put a garden box on and leave it in the street. It won't be functional, but neither are a lot of other vehicles on the street! 181
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 06/10/2026This is also #alberta. Both rural areas rejecting people and suburban areas refusing to address homeless issues. Push them to #yeg #yyc. Reminds me of Ralph Klein - buy a one-way bus ticket for anyone on welfare. Cruelty defined in Canada’s richest province. 010
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Just one near-downtown resident here who wants less drive-through traffic, more local services, and lower taxes. And lower rents for my neighbours. That used to be a position that would be considered conservative. 050

The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I’m with you, I quit around -20 - bike doesn’t work as well and too long getting dressed and unbundled compared to other options for me. I don’t mind walking at -30, but I fog up too much even with goggles. 020

The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 30/09/2026(Compared to drivers today with cell phones, screens, etc I think I was much better!) It was a learning experience! I have done some stupid stuff since, but in general I pay attention… 011
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 30/09/2026In 1986, when I was 21 and had been driving for 5 years, I moved to #yyc to work for a summer at an oilco. They made me take a driver test in case I was sent to out of town assignments. I flunked even though I had a license and believed I was a good driver. 110
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 29/09/2026The 50th street redesign is planning 30 spots at about $80,000 each, $2.5M more than the original plan. That sounds like a crazy amount, but streets cost more than we think?? Just build them all a garage on their front lawn would be cheaper! 020
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 28/09/2026What is equitable? We don’t pay flat rate for water, sewer, garbage so why should we for street parking? Do we have to build such huge residential streets? We street park maybe 5 days per year. My neighbours routinely have >1 lot worth of personal and commercial vehicles on the street. 050
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Hey #yeg, should we all pay for storing private property on public property? Should it be limited to “vehicles“ of whatever size regardless of personal or corporate ownership? The U-Haul near my place used to store many trucks on the street. What about rebates for parking on your property? 350
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Indeed. In a very different industry but the things I’ve learned working on 6 continents are profound. Both in my natural resources sector and about people, cities, and natural areas. My big takeaway is that people - if not their leaders - are generally good everywhere. 000
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I read it and it is in part why I supported him in the last election. His actions since show the book has virtually no relevance to his policies. The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Don’t forget to check that your mail-in ballot has been processed. If it doesn’t get processed in time, CBC says you can still vote in person on referendum day. You will have a link in your “Special Ballot Request Confirmation” email. #yeg #yyc 010
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 25/09/2026120 st is a mess right now, hopefully better soon but driving there might be…interesting. We just ride down the hill and through that parking lot regularly. 010
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 24/09/2026The idea that we can recycle our way out of needing new mines and processing is laughable. There is a long stock-building phase which - with 10+ yr life in vehicle and substantial second use potential - means even 100% efficient recycling would be at least 50 yrs from being majority of supply. 011
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 24/09/2026I grow a pink potato that adds some delightful colour to dinner, and have been able to over winter root stock for the last 4 years. That makes them basically free at this point! Let me know if you want to do a swap… 000
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 24/09/2026I think we have one in YEG (Jasper and 121 st which has like 5 seconds of advance). Doesn’t seem much, but maybe it lets pedestrians get into the driven field of view (which SHOULD be much wider than just oncoming vehicles!) 021
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 24/09/2026There are several bus lines running though. The ones I have used stop at YYC but not YEG and do downtown to downtown - which I do for conferences etc. About 4 hours but pretty cheap and environmentally efficient. I’d rather take a train and avoid the traffic!! 020
The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Interesting. My spouse got an email from Epcor about this 1 week ago that said cyclists should watch for posted signage and follow detour instructions. Be nice if they followed through!! I got surprised by it yesterday morning! 120

The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Your reminder that despite the referendum results this fall, the UCP may well be planning to guarantee continued rule by giving more power to rural voters. The Nickel Nerd @ltrytten.bsky.social · 17/09/2026As and Albertan, there are pockets where this goes back further. We’ve had Wexit parties before. But this big push is absolutely ramped up by the enshittification of our society by some social media since the first Trump term, amplified by the (pretty mild) pandemic restrictions. 120
