Last week, my staff and I volunteered at Open Door Café in Wytheville. Open Door Café is Virginia’s only “donate-what-you-can” restaurant, offering everyone who walks through the door t chance to volunteer service in exchange for a home cooked meal, regardless of ability to pay.

What a fantastic afternoon in Wytheville for the Acres of Democrats CD-9 Annual Fundraiser! Since 1960, this event has brought Democrats from across the Fighting Ninth together. The energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to Southwest Virginia were on full display.

Today, the Commonwealth gathered to honor 866 members of the Virginia National Guard’s 116th Mobile Brigade as they deploy for Operation Inherent Resolve, answering the call to serve in a historic mobilization: the largest mobilization of the National Guard since World War II.

Virginia, three critical constitutional amendments are on the ballot this November. Constitutional amendments are special: they require passage by two General Assemblies and then voters have a direct voice. Voting Yes gives you the power to protect rights for Virginians.

(1/2) 106 years ago today, the 19th Amendment expanded the promise of democracy, but the fight for women’s suffrage did not end with its ratification. It took the Civil Rights Movement and the Voting Rights Act to make that promise more meaningful and accessible to women of color
