Today in why your librarian is stressed: academic journals increase in cost about 5% every single year while our funding continues to, at best, stagnate. And that's just the things we already purchase, much less the new acquisitions our patrons need or want.

Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse: archive.org/details/tipp...
A casual Star Wars alien fella at the cantina, in a sun faded, reddish photo. Someone will be mad at me for not knowing who this is. Phil, a balding Caucasian man, poses a model of the garthok, an antagonist from the Coneheads movie.Phil, a balding caucasian man, points at some CG on a CRT computer monitor, as a younger man looks on. The screen shows a model of a dinosaur attacking a jeep, while there's an actual physical model of that event in the foreground for reference.an isolated shot of a star wars vehicle. We’re recapping some U18 lecturer bargaining highlights in support of a fair contract. ✊ weteachuc.org/bargaining-u... Kat Lewin spoke about the importance for Zoom bargaining to support transparency: “It’s important for our members to understand the contract if they’re going to ratify it.”
A bright blue graphic from UC-AFT Local 1474 featuring a large orange speech bubble with the following quote: "We know that power on your side of the table flows up to the Regents. Our power flows down from 5,300 people who will ratify the contract. It’s important for them to understand the contract if they’re going to ratify it."

The bottom of the image includes a yellow banner that reads: "UC-AFT Table Team Co-Chair Kat Lewin on the importance of Zoom bargaining at WeTeachUC.org." The background has the repeated phrase "BARGAINING HIGHLIGHTS" in a yellow outlined font.

The entire Puget Sound region is facing an ICE surge. ICE has been steadily ramping up ops since January but this weekend saw an unprecedented increase in the area. This is what iceout.org looks like for Sept. 19-21. Not a month or a week. Three days. Hundreds of sightings. Dozens of abductions.
Screenshot of iceout.org, filtered for 9/19/2026 – 9/21/2026: several green and yellow pins, and way too many red pins indicating an arrest. Pins are scattered all over the I-5 corridor from Marysvill all the way down to Olympia, with a few outliers.

Knitting machine punch cards are a living form of computing history. 🧶💾 In "Punch Card Knitting," Nichole Misako Nomura explores how these binary codes are still used today, and the challenges of preserving them. 📚 Read it in VANISHING CULTURE, FREE: archive.org/details/vani...
What can knitting machines teach us about the history of computing?"They're an important piece of computing history—and crucially, one of the few that isn't only history because a broad community of people, on- and off-line, are still sharing knowledge on how to hack, restore, and use "Knitting punch cards are an important part of any feminist computing history, and surprisingly resilient." Libraries tossing out weeded titles is not a travesty. 🧵 1. libraries MUST weed. We don't have magic shelves with unlimited space. 2. we do try to find alternatives to recycling. Book sales, free tables, and places like Better World Books get the majority of weeded titles. 1/3
