Finally tried the Merlin app and it helped me identify my first rare bird (juvenile red-necked grebe, we saw it eating a fish!) AND I got a halfway decent shot of the kingfisher! Plus it identified 18 more birds by sound! BARK!

It's a REAL MOOD to take one rest day because you've been working yourself to exhaustion for weeks straight and immediately get a 'when do I get my stuff' message as soon as you wake up the next morning. This is exactly how burnout starts. Tired of feeling like resting is negatively reinforced.

This must be what it was like to hunt mammoths. You're gonna eat well for days (maybe weeks) on every successful hunt, but it's brutal, you can't get hurt or sick or you'll starve, and you have to be strong enough to last through the famine inbetween and still be able to fight a mountain at the end.

Apparently, it's #WorldLionDay! A magnificent lion head carved from mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago. Although small in size (H. 2.3 cm), it exhibits remarkable detail. Found at the Vogelherd Cave, located in the Swabian Jura region. On display at Landesmuseum Württemberg

Had to go outside with the dog at 3am and we were treated to an owl chorus! No less than three distinct barred owl voices in slightly different pitches in different directions, sometimes as a call-and-response and sometimes as an overlapping chord. Neat!
