"Slime mold" is a popular political insult, but not a very fitting one. Slime molds are actually the smartest and safest molds, in many ways smarter and safer than politicians. I definitely would not eat a US senator for example, nor would I expect them to do complex pathfinding calculations for me

"Kingdom Protista" ("Protozoa") does not exist: some protists are more closely related to Animals, Plants, or Fungi than to other protists. They share no genetics, morphology, or ecology. "Kingdom Monera" is similarly artificial: Archaea are more closely related to Plants, Animals, & all other eukaryotes than to Bacteria

Ant for scale - Today on my lunch walk I found a slime mold species I haven’t seen before. Physarum viride (thanks to @regularslimeguy.bsky.social for the identification). #slimemold #myxomycetes #fungifriends
Many small sulphur yellow balls on thin sticks. They are slime mold fruiting bodies and the heads are filled with dark spores. They are dwarfed by the presence of an ant.

If peanuts were described online like slime molds: "Peanuts are a Fabales paste associated with grocery stores. Neither a pea nor a nut, they are related to algae (although their taxonomic placement is an unknowable mystery). Peanuts are potentially lethal and kill thousands of children each year.
Peanuts are often involved in size-related contests at state fairs, and are carved into traditional jack-o-lanterns the Tuesday before Christmas

Collodarians are amoebas related to kelp & diatoms. Thousands of them hold hands to form jelly tubes that can grow up to 10 feet long. They keep a garden of algae in the center of the tube, but they also grab prey with their long creepy fingers. They mostly drift but some can contract, sink, or rise

There are basically 3 types of amoeba: those more closely related to plants usually have microtubules in their pseudpods, those more closely related to animals only have microtubules in their center, and Discoban amoebas have no microtubules at all unless they grow a flagella. Discobans branched off early and may be closer to plants or basal to all eukaryotes.

Slime nets were once grouped with slime molds, but they are actually related to diatoms & kelp! Like their other relative the water mold, they are similar in many ways to a fungus. Unlike slime molds, slime nets 1) decay living & dead plants 2) maintain separate cells 3) have immobile networks

from www.instagram.com/yeweijun98 Slime molds eat the microbes on decaying plants but not the microbes on decaying animals. Badhamia (Physarum) polycephala is an unusually adventurous eater who also enjoys mushrooms, oats, and probably a number of other things! I wonder what's up with the peanut
