I got a one star "fit only for the bin" because my historical romance novel - The Admiral's Daughter - was not an in-depth study of the Georgian navy. Which if course, the reader should have expected from M&B, that well-known military history publisher.

It was the great Richard Richardson, fabulous bird artist and illustrator of one of the first "modern" pocket field guides

I was at a bird reserve in Norfolk with a very good birder & a couple got very excited about a flock of homing pigeons. 'What are they?' 'Ptarmigan,' Richard replied, straight-faced. Silence. Then isn't it a bit early for those?' they asked. Ever since, homing pigeons have been ptarmigan

As has been noticed by others, the irony of Meta happily stealing millions of authors’ words but refusing to open the door to have a letter delivered - will Lisa Nandy or Chris Bryant stand up for British artists or turn their eyes and kiss a corporate ring

Fab turnout at the #MetaBookThieves demo. Everyone comparing notes. "How many of yours did they steal?" Winner so far is Jenny Haddon, 55.

Today UK authors are protesting against Meta for stealing our work to train their AI model. Authors earn an average of £7000 per year, we are not rich, and yet a trillion dollar company decided it didn’t want to license our work fairly as it was “too expensive” Theft is not a valid alternative.
META BOOK THIEVES - They Must Do The Write Thing

The Society of Authors are protesting Meta’s HQ today

Today I will be joining the Society of Authors in demanding that Meta makes recompense for stealing my work and that of millions of others to train its AI software. You can afford this. We can’t. What you did was illegal. Fess up, and pay up.

The existing copyright law is fine as it is. The suggested 'opt out' puts the onus on the small producers to tell the thieves not to steal their stuff - that's not a fair burden. If the AI companies feel it's 'too expensive' to follow the law as is, that's a problem with their business model.

I've yet to have anyone explain coherently why forcing artists to "opt out" of their work being stolen is ok and workable, or indeed any different than me stealing my neighbour's car because they didn't opt out from their car being stolen.

Have just reported a blocked joint sewer to Anglian Water & they have said they'll "investigate within a week". So they think it is OK to leave two households of over 70s without drainage for a week. Yet another useless water company

I will never allow AI to replace human narrators on any audiobooks of my work. I’d rather not have an audio book. Human made art is an endangered species, & too many of its custodians are already enabling its demise for profit margins. EVERYONE SHOULD CARE ABOUT THIS. Art Is Humanity.

Going by the elephants - I wonder if Thur. is earlier - it looks like a direct copy from a mss illustration. Tutt. has different, simpler, ears so may be a copy? But the man playing a lute is more complex at Tutt.

I went to the Science Museum yesterday and as well as having a ball with my nearly four year old in their amazing child spaces (god love free London museums) I was utterly charmed by this caption.
A caption from an exhibition in the Science Museum in London about a model of an Apollo 11 lunar module built by a 12 year old boy, which reveals at the very end that the creator of the model now works as Curator of the Museum’s Space Technology Collection.
