More choice doesn't automatically mean more agency. Too many options can overwhelm learners. Sometimes the most supportive choice is a small set of meaningful options. #UDL #LearnerAgency #Teachers
Venn diagram titled "Choice is not the same as learner agency" contrasting "Choice"—giving students options that can be trivial, overwhelming, or without support—with "Learner agency"—setting goals, monitoring progress, and self-regulation—and their overlap: meaningful, manageable choices. A blue square in the background with a red rectangle in the middle. These words in white, More choice isn't necessarily better.

Want to design for agency through choice? Ask: Does the choice matter? Do learners have support? Can they shape the work? Will they reflect? #UDL #LearnerAgency #Teachers
A Venn diagram titled “Choice is not the same as learner agency.” The left circle represents Choice, defined as giving students options such as topics, materials, partners, or ways to show learning. The right circle represents Learner agency, defined as the capacity to intentionally set goals, anticipate outcomes, monitor, and reflect. The overlap is “Agency through meaningful choice,” while the outer sections describe “Choice without agency” and “Agency without choice.” The slide also includes examples and research references for each area.

It's not about giving learners more choices. It's about designing better choices. Meaningful choices connect to goals, interests, and values, and invite reflection. #UDL #LearnerAgency #Inclusion

Agency can exist without choice. Learners can ask questions, share ideas, critique, justify, monitor, and reflect, even when they didn't choose the task. #UDL #LearnerAgency #Teachers

More choice isn't always better. Surface-level choices, too many options, or choices without support may not build agency. The question is: Which choices actually matter? #UDL #Teachers #Inclusion

Choice ≠ learner agency. Offering options can build agency, but it doesn't guarantee it. And agency can grow inside tasks learners didn't choose. #UDL #LearnerAgency #Inclusion
