I think we should start measuring government programmes in Hayden Donnell's 'metres of roading'. Lowering the age of bowel cancer screening to 45? 5 metres of road. A year of Three Waters? 63 metres of road. Reading recovery? 13mm of road.

I know so many Americans, who are the best people I have ever met! It's sad your country is going through these...
Panel 1: Against a light blue background, Sven stands on the left, looking up at a white, simplified character sitting behind a high gray desk labeled "INSURANCE". Sven says, "I NEED HEALTHCARE". The insurance agent looks at him with an open mouth, saying, "LMAO! YOU SERIOUS?".

Panel 2: The scene slightly zooms out. A second white character has joined the first behind the insurance desk. The first agent points dramatically at Sven, shouting to his colleague, "HEY! THIS GUY WANTS HEALTHCARE!". The second agent throws his head back in intense laughter, shouting, "AHAHAHA!!". Sven stands there looking dejected and small.

Panel 3: The scene abruptly cuts to a bedroom with a purple wall. Sven is in bed, waking up in a cold sweat with a terrified, wide-mouthed expression, sweating and shouting, "NOOOO!!". Next to him, a green-skinned partner with blonde hair opens their eyes sleepily and asks, "WHAT'S WRONG, SVEN?".

Panel 4: A close-up of Sven sitting up in the dark against a pitch-black background. He looks deeply shaken, clutching his head with sweat dripping down his face. He somberley says, "I THINK I HAD AN AMERICAN DREAM...".

Things are grim but doing something helps with feelings of helplessness. Donate to a charity. Write to your MP. Sign a petition. But also look for joy, whimsy, beauty. They are vitamins that you will need to strengthen yourself so you have the energy and stamina to keep on keeping on.

They're right you know
Post from Shaneel Lal

“ This is classic ruling-class politics: divide working people along the lines of identity so they never look up at the people actually causing harm.

Who’s taking your jobs? “The immigrants,” they say, while the government cuts 10,000 jobs.

Who’s harming women and girls? “Transgender people,” they say, while they strip pay equity from women-dominated professions.

Who’s taking the land and housing? “Māori,” they say, while they hand tax cuts and wealth to landlords and the wealthy.

Working people are being turned against one another while those in power continue to profit.

We need solidarity across our communities because if we allow ourselves to be divided by race, gender, sexuality, or identity, this government and the ruling class will pick us apart until all of us are left worse off.”

A year ago, ministers met to consider tightening NZ’s pay equity law. Their decisions went further than officials had advised, hardening the policy to the point some groups were cut out from ever making a claim. Why? And on what evidence? They won’t show us. www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

How a crucial 45-minute meeting between ministers took pay equity claims away from tens of thousands of women
In a crucial 45 minute meeting, ministers decided to go beyond official proposals, making it even harder for 180,000 workers to ask for pay equity.

I don’t know the story here but my best guess is “tripped over the cat going down stairs in the dark but still love him”. Photo from my collection, 1958.
Black and white photo of a smiling white woman sitting outside on a sunny house stoop, wearing a cast and sling on her right arm and cervical collar. A happy little shorthaired black cat rubs up beside her.

NZ has fallen into a 'crisis and response' pattern on climate disaster, experts say. Billions have been spent on storm recovery since 2023, while key climate adaptation funding and planning tools have been cut. My story looking at last week’s storms www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

People always say cyclists need to be more afraid of cars, because in a collision, the car wins.

It doesn't have to be like that. We can _both_lose.
