🧬 Then I tried adding two genetic variables to the parent reported predictors. But they didn't add much accuracy. For now, asking parents questions or observing the child seem the best approaches to spotting language delays and disorders in young children. doi.org/10.1016/j.ps... 8/12

In my first study, I developed predictor sets that are: ✅ short (5-8 questions for parents when their child is 2-3yo) and ✅ accurate (>70% sensitivity and specificity) ✅ at predicting language 8-9y later (at 11yo) doi.org/10.1111/jcpp... 6/12

Lottie Gasparini @lottiegasp.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
📈 We need predictors that can identify true cases of both low and typical language outcome. (High sensitivity AND specificity) ⏱️ Screening approaches must be feasible for widespread administration. (Not a survey of 100s of questions for parents) 🔁 Results need to replicate. 5/12

Lottie Gasparini @lottiegasp.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
I argue that: 👶➡️🧒We need EARLY identification of LATER outcomes Global language at 2-3y is not stable enough to reflect persisting language skills. (Many late talkers catch up). So we need to test early predictors (0-3y) against robust middle/late childhood language outcomes (4y+) 4/12

Lottie Gasparini @lottiegasp.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
I identified the issue that: 🔎 we do not know how to identify young children with language disorders (At least not accurately enough across the whole population to justify population-wide screening) 3/12

Seeking parents and health or education workers!
It is hard to know which children should see a Speech Pathologist before they start school.
We are making a tool that will help spot which children should see a Speech Pathologist.
In this study, we are asking for opinions about how to make this tool.

Are you:
A parent of a child 0-6 years old?
A Speech Pathologist? Or,
Another health or education worker who works with children 0-4 years old?
What is this study?
We are making a tool that will help spot which children should see a Speech Pathologist.
This study will get your opinions about how to make this tool useful and trustworthy for parents and health and education providers.
What’s involved?
You will do the survey on your phone or computer.
The whole survey will take about 20 minutes of your time. It doesn’t need to be done in one go. You can save your progress and return later.

The best ways to identify most young children with language disorder are still to ask parents questions 📝, or for a clinician to observe the child 👀. Here is a super short set of questions you can ask parents to identify 2-3-year-olds likely to have later language difficulties! 3/n

⭐ New paper published in Psychiatry Research ⭐ 🧬 Available genetic measures can’t yet help us identify individuals with low language at 11 years #DevLangDis #DLD #genetics #language doi.org/10.1016/j.ps... 1/n
Available genetic measures can’t help us identify individuals with low language at 11 years. 1. What this research is about. About 1 in 10 children has a language disorder. It’s hard to identify these children when they are young. This makes it hard to give them the support they need. Picture of a parent looking at a child with a magnifying glass. 2. What the researchers did. We calculated a measure that represents part of an individual’s genetic risk of having lower language skills. We combined this genetic measure with parent survey questions to see how well they predicted individuals’ language at 11 years. Picture of a strand of DNA plus a parent holding a child and a survey. 3. What the researchers found. We repeated the results across 2 groups. In both groups, the survey questions could predict about three quarters of children with low language at 11 years. See the “Survey only” bars in the graph. A graph shows that "Survey only" had 86% and 74% accuracy. Our genetic measures did not improve how well we could predict individuals’ later language very much. The numbers for “Survey and genetics” are not that much higher than the dark bars. A graph shows that "Survey and genetics" had 87% and 78% accuracy. 4. What this means. Genetics can’t help yet with identifying most young children with language disorders. The best ways are still to ask parents questions, or for a clinician to observe the child. Dear Mr Khalil and Ms Ratnam,

I am a resident of Wills. I am writing today after having just written to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong asking them to meet immediately with Dr Mohammed Mustafa following his return to Australia from Gaza. Whoever becomes my next Wills MP, I urge you to please show your support and urge Mr Albanese and Ms Wong to meet with Dr Mustafa.

I fully support Dr Mustafa's goal to build a children's hospital in Gaza. As someone who works as a researcher at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute at the Melbourne Royal Children’s Hospital, improving the lives of children is the goal of my own career. It would be remiss to ignore the suffering and deaths of thousands of Palestinian children.

Please urge the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister to meet with Dr Mustafa as soon as possible and ask them to listen to him about how Australia can support Palestinians.

Yours sincerely,
