From drafting a law, approving that law, rewriting that law, enforcing that law, defending that law, at basically every level of local government, this is a story of San Diego's incompetence. "No way to avoid it" says the only place where this happens. www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/07/05/c...

Court rulings force San Diego to halt vendor crackdown. Will chaos return to downtown, beaches?
Recent court rulings have forced San Diego to halt a city crackdown on street vendors that has been hailed for restoring order to Balboa Park, the Gaslamp Quarter, city beaches and other popular spots...

Raising one to Kelly Davis today. I was lucky to know her, and her jail deaths reporting at CityBeat and with Jeff has profoundly influenced the way I think about incarceration. Idk if I ever told her that. www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/07/01/k...

Kelly Davis, intrepid reporter who exposed death and despair in San Diego County jails and gave voice to the downtrodden, dies at 53
The 2023 San Diego journalist of the year beat cancer for more than a decade before being diagnosed with a new tumor earlier this year; she leaves a lasting legacy in her adopted hometown.

They keep telling us straight up that surveillance technology is a force multiplier. They do not claim it is a crime reducer.

The obvious solution is to maintain a confirmed ID database of everyone who ever buys shoes in the event that they may use those shoes to walk into a liquor store while being 11. Good thing this is the approach currently being considered for tech, we have the best minds and leaders.

I think it might be helpful to divorce the question of "should little kids be on social media?" from "should keeping kids off social media be enforced via surveillance?"

Wasnt judging. I'd imagine a lot of ppl who like big police budgets probably voted against that interest when voting no on A because it was not clear

Fiankan had interesting politics, and Measure A was a naked general fund increase measure which would have disproportionately benefited SDPD, which claims a giant portion of the GF. Measure A = millions to SDPD, just math. Probly would've used it to prop up failing surveillance tech

Also San Diego's Measure A was a veiled budget increase initiative for SDPD, apparently the veil was a little too thick

Oh public bathrooms. Someone speaks up for public bathrooms! Should we be a city with no bathrooms, no daytime homeless service and no arts but plenty of surveillance? That sounds like a really vibrant place.

Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Speaker has measured the police budget in inches and demonstrates that its more than 7ft long compared to millimeters for the homeless day center. Next speaker thanks her for the art.
110
Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Dozens of speakers have argued for arts and homeless funding, nobody so far asking for surveillance. "We don't give a Flock, restore the arts" chant broke out though.
120
Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Speaker would like the daytime homeless center to be rescued from being shut down. Sadly, first person I've heard mention that
110
Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Recent speaker read a nice haiku about the budget. It was not in support of surveillance I'm pretty sure but with haiku you can't ever really be sure

Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
This speaker uses arts funding to take music in to correctional facilities. That will be gone.

"Arts and culture are not a luxury they are a public good." "It is our entire livelihood."

Speakers for arts and youth identify surveillance as an example of funds that shouldn't be spent while youth and arts funding are being cut
100
Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Speaker argues for arts funding and identifies the mayors communications staff as a source for millions of funding.
100
Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Several speakers urging council to keep arts funding flat at least, and pleadings to find the money. 6 speakers and counting I think. Opera guy notes a clubhouse for a golf course got funding back in May, though

Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Old Globe guy would like city money to continue to help keep people going to the theater. He says there could be money in the budget for this, doesn't note where.

Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
More speakers advocating for youth, specifically the office of youth services. nobody asking for more mass surveillance, they must have missed the memo on how much safety they would get
000
Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Another speaker urges money for youth programs. " cameras will not stop crime they will only show you the bodies."
110
Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
2 speakers don't think money for surveillance is a good idea. Strong words against surveillance that failed to stop a recent mass shooting tragedy.
120
Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
This speaker's priority is the office of youth services set for closure. He thinks that funding should come from the police budget.
100
Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
One speaker just doesn't want money spent on surveillance.
100
Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Fair critique I think that people who want arts funding need to learn better how to join with other community orgs to figure our how to keep funding going
100
Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Youth programs to keep kids busy and growing and mentored instead of unsupported out on their own after schools. (Gosh that sounds like public safety @joelacava.bsky.social ) Speaker specifically asks to defund surveillance.

Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
(I would note that people like Joe LaCava, Raul Campillo and Marni von Wilpert routinely dominate the narrative of "Public Safety" with exclusively funding for the police department. Maybe they think cops should help blind folks cross streets and repair City Heights parks?)

Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Repair of park infrastructure in City Heights. Neglect of park deterioration has the effect of making neighborhoods dangerous.

Street safety for blind people. Unmaintained/broken street level infrastructure represents a life and death problem for the blind community.

Arts funding. The arts commission has lots of ideas about how the city can keep arts funding alive on a smaller budget. Not zero budget, though.

Tonight I'm at San Diego City Council listening to San Diegans ask for public funding at the final budget hearing. I bet none of them are here to ask for money for mass surveillance technology. Here are the things San Diegans want, in their own voices, instead of millions of dollars of surveillance:

It's a force multiplier guys, chill
010
Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 22/03/2026
Sadly the modern answer to your question about lack of enforcement is to whip up fear in the community in support of mass surveillance technology as a false solution for enforcement. It diverts millions and doesn't work, but anyone with an "enforcement" mindset eats it up

No, you cant disagree that adding a new type of vehicle that unlocks dangerous thrilling behavior at many earlier ages than previously available is newly additive to the total risk of all potential vehicle related injuries today. Foul ball! Perhaps you mean risk relative to you as a street cyclist
000
Seth Hall @loteck.bsky.social · 22/03/2026
Adolescents don't have broad access to pickup trucks. This is additive risk, not zero sum.

Your main point stand well enough but nevertheless I'd estimate 80% of the ebike use I observe in my hood shows no regard for safety of rider or surroundings. Likely to do with apparent age of driver. I'm not panicking, I'm witnessing.
