What I loved about the original Practical Magic was how stupid it thought I was and how often it just repeatedly said what it was doing AT me because of how small my brain is...

Recasting the girls - particularly when Evan Rachel Wood is a solid actress and Joey King is a guarantee that what you're about to watch is absolute ass- because it's unbelievable that romance or challenge can happen at 35-40, killing off beloved aunties to do it... for what? For some dude named Gideon that the screenplay forgets while it's writing him? What age are women allowed to be? 20s or 50s but nothing in between or over? What purpose are they allowed to have?

For a movie that repeatedly says sisterhood, it sure gave Maisie Williams fuck all to do. It feels like a random CW-esque witchy made for tv drama was forced into a shape that could technically and legally be called Practical Magic. Just a complete waste of time and an insult to its entire cast, except for Joey King who cannot be insulted because her passion is delivering shit from an ass line readings in the dumbest movies and shows you've ever seen. There's no point in getting into the paper thin nothing they gave Lee Pace or the last minute snooze that is the alleged villain or the Assassin's Creed montages of it all, because ultimately the treatment of the Owens family is so disrespectful none of that other stuff could save it.

Completely unearned use of Landslide and no good reason to use Florence + the Machine and Howl definitely didn't make sense there, WHATEVER

2.5 stars for Tinsman Road.

There are things in the first 30-40 minutes of this that really felt like a breath of fresh air - our protag isn't an established filmmaker or influencer and is bad at the camera AND interviews, the people in this felt deeply authentic, and I was excited by the prospect of music giving voice to our missing, presumed dead character AND function as a narrative tool. But the rest of the film never utilizes these things. Slow, unfocused scenes with no regard for pacing or storytelling are occasionally punctuated by what feel like genuine expressions of grief, but it's hard to say that this film EVER melts into a horror of any kind. It doesn't fully lean into found footage absent of the supernatural and it doesn't bother to unpack the supernatural elements at all. It tries to have it both ways and so fails to have it either.

I also think this is possibly only scary to people who did not grow up with the sound of the woods and even then?

one of my favorite hidden plots in Cyberpunk 2077 is Dakota working with Charlize Fury to emancipate some girls and women who have been artificially impregnated by Biotechnica. A very neat easter egg to Fury Road but entirely on point with many larger narratives/themes in the game.
