Depending on how bad the consequences are, it might just end up being a teachable moment. They hit them, don't die, and have a few seconds to correct. Lesson learned! More forgiveness early game, less so later? Might teach the wrong thing though. It's hard to say without much game info 😀

I'd have thought it was pretty instinctual to get off of spikes when they hurt you. It sounds like your approach is exactly like Mario and Sonic, and it works for them! Would it be possible to bounce the player off the spikes to a safe spot? Or keep them invincible until they jump?

It acts like it feels pain in the same way a psychopath acts like they feel emotion. They know what it looks like, they know what to say, but they don't feel it. Pain is a nerve reaction that happens before the brain has time. A computer can't do that. Your mouse and keyboard don't feel things.
