This whole entire thread, and… People often conceive of their lives — or rather, often *live* their lives without that reflective remove — as a set of relationships in ways that are imperceptible to the creators of dehumanizing systems. What you get when you actually care and listen to people.

I wasn’t sure there was much more to say about the Manchester City case but if you’re a football fan, I encourage you to listen to @barneyronay.bsky.social on @footballweekly.bsky.social today - he frames it, and the role of sport investment, brilliantly youtu.be/WFGjw1sOgjE

I’ve said something similar to editors in newsrooms. “If you tell it it’s wrong, it immediately apologizes, acknowledges the errors, and tries to do better. Are you surprised they prefer it to you?”

It’s a bar and community venue called The Shrine. At the back is a large wall with a huge niche with shelves and wall space. That’s the shrine. Every month, another community member is given a budget to acquire things for the shrine connected to a personal or professional passion of theirs.

The curators are deliberately chosen to be a wide variety of ages (alcohol only after 8pm if it’s a kid), to encourage a wide range of people passing through. Each edition also leads to the creation of a zine. There’s an archive. Every five years, there’s a book.

The local newspaper announces each forthcoming theme, dedicating a monthly column to setting it up and getting people intrigued. So it’s a theme bar/space, a museum, a community happening, and regulars get a constantly rotating education and mix of old and new people.

The guest curator opens it each month, and at the end they can keep whatever they like from the shrine. The rest is auctioned for charity or put into storage. Anyone can apply to curate a month. A committee of local community members chooses the curators every quarter.

Through the month, The Shrine pays speakers to talk about the topic. The music is thematic. The drinks list also. There are books to borrow. There is a community dinner, free tickets by lottery, for both regulars and those who have a connection to the theme, to mingle and connect and break bread
