spoke to cbc: if we are concerned abt public drug use, why not address the fact that people have nowhere to go? why not invest in the conditions that prevent people from being stuck outside? stop conflating homelessness w substance use. and the hart hubs are a farce.

Ontario Works rates have not increased since 2018 - eight years now - staying at $733 (including max shelter allowance). Meanwhile, according to the Ontario gvt, inflation has gone up about 23% since 2018.

today’s heat is so dangerous for people unhoused and precariously housed. the city has ONE cooling centre w a capacity of up to 45ppl and it’s not accessible.

the city's response to extreme weather is often reactive and embarrassing. the larger conversation is this: we are living in climate emergencies and the city repeatedly demonstrates it is not equipped - not willing - to respond appropriately. [end] @shjntoronto.bsky.social @cathycrowe.bsky.social

the city tells people to stay hydrated, stay cool, and wear appropriate layers in this heat. they have a water truck in each quadrant of the city but the trucks have no cups. you can see the layers of barriers that exist for people. who are unhoused. [9/]

plus suggesting splash pads as an option is also not it: yes they are accessible options for some, but you can imagine the uproar in the neighbourhood facebook group (or the number times cops are called) if an unhoused person goes to a splash pad to cool down. [8/]

re: this heat relief network with "500 cool spaces" - just because a space has air conditioning doesn’t make it a suitable cooling centre respite for people who are unhoused. these places close at a certain time; the heat doesn’t stop heating because it’s 10pm. [6/]

Dr Murti then says that it’s a better use of resources to add more shelter beds: 100 spaces. Y’all we’ve lost 2000 beds since January; so …. 100 beds? this is embarrassing. There are also shelters in the city that don't have air conditioning. [5/]

3. there were some summers in the late 2010s that were cooler, so the cooling centres weren’t needed as much. this isn't the case now. to say they were underused just by counting the number of people present is poor data collection & not reporting a full story. AND - [4/]

lorrainelamchops.bsky.social @lorrainelamchops.bsky.social · 22/04/2026
Besides the obvious fact that having to sleep outside is itself a safety concern for… the person outside, unhoused people are more likely to be victims of crime. You know what’s violent? Freezing to death outside. Who’s actually “safer” when you close the park? 7/

Closing SCS’ & the shuttering of harm reduction services (i.e. needle exchange) is a concern; these services are VITAL in combating the spread of HIV & bloodbourne diseases. Honour the AIDS memorial & community by fighting for these services, not scapegoating the vulnerable. 6/

Persistent heath & safety concerns, citing violence & opioid-related incidents: SCS' have shuttered as the toxic drug crisis ravages on. The BoH has acted like chicken shit, not having a backbone to fight the province. ODs have increased by nearly 50% between Jan 2026 & Jan 2025.

So yes, be hidden for 14 days but prove that you were here…. IF you get caught within the 14 days, you’re sent back. IF you were staying with someone during those 14 days, the person who’s housed you risks criminal charges and/or heavy fines up to $1 million. [3/]

One exception to the STCA is the 14 day rule: if you cross into Canada and go undetected for 14 days, you can then submit a refugee claim and present yourself to authorities instead of being sent back under the STCA. BUT you also have to prove that you were in the country for the 14 days. [2/]
