The latest from #UKSGInsights: "Well‑being support and further education libraries: supporting the whole student" by @rhuski.bsky.social at @derbycollege.bsky.social dub.sh/ffB7USA
Abstract: Recent years have seen increased interest in well‑being support within academic libraries, yet UK further education (FE) libraries remain under‑researched in this area. This study, utilizing a cross‑sectional survey conducted in England in May 2025, collected 42 responses to explore the drivers, approaches, challenges and impact of student well‑being support in FE libraries. Analysis involved quantitative methods alongside content analysis of open‑ended questions. The findings indicate various drivers suggesting a non‑targeted strategy, frequently integrated with core services. While a wide array of approaches exists, collection‑based initiatives are most prevalent. Strong evidence of cross‑college partnership and initiative evaluation was found; however, this data often failed to demonstrate clear impact to senior leadership. Primary barriers include limited staff time and budgets, alongside difficulties in fostering engagement and promotion. These results largely align with broader academic library literature. Key recommendations emphasize adopting a strategic approach to well‑being that aligns with specific college priorities. Depending on available resources, libraries should prioritize demonstrating the impact of core services rather than overstretching by introducing initiatives beyond their primary scope. This ensures that well‑being support remains sustainable and relevant within the FE context.

"Rather than framing OA as inherently more or less prone to integrity failures, the article argues that these challenges reflect broader incentive structures within (scholcomm)." Fair enough, the issue isn't OA itself. The issue is APCs, which are an OA-specific issue. Let's not lose sight of that.

Our latest from #UKSGInsights: "Goals and evaluations of transformative agreements: an exploratory study of consortial approaches" by Monica Ward dub.sh/w6yFVfS
Since the first transformative agreement (TA) in 2015, engagement in TAs has increased, as evidenced by the growing number of agreements in the Efficiencies Standards for Article Charges (ESAC) TA registry. This study aims to determine whether library consortia involved in TAs have clear goals and if they assess the agreements they negotiate. These two questions are answered by a literature review and an examination of websites and reports from 18 consortia with 15 or more TAs in the ESAC registry. The findings indicate that most consortia in the sample had a defined goal and had undertaken some form of assessment, although the depth and breadth of both varies widely. Some of the main themes that emerged were cost-neutrality, an increase in open access (OA) papers and a desire to pay for publishing rather than subscriptions. A key takeaway of this investigation was the importance of evaluating each agreement individually, due to the vast differences between TAs. An overarching theme was the role of research assessment practices, journal prestige and the perceived need for researchers to publish in certain publications – all factors that constrain libraries’ decisions to engage in TAs.

The latest from #UKSGInsights: Interdisciplinary collaboration for open research: reflections by Graduate Engagement Leads by Katie Vernon, Yorgos Paschos and Luqman Muraina from @uoylibrary.bsky.social dub.sh/UFKM2yf
This case study provides an in-role reflection by the Graduate Engagement Leads for Open Research at the University of York. It uses the methodologies of reflection in practice and reflection-on-the-future to explore the challenges, such as gaps in provision and knowledge between different disciplines, and opportunities, such as instigating new initiatives, that the Leads have faced. The case study integrates personal reflections on how the role has changed the Leads’ outlooks and knowledge of open research, and how they hope to promote an open research culture in their professional and academic work. It also reflects on the anticipated future impacts of the role, such as through updating online resources for training and advocacy, as well as reflecting on how the role has influenced our approach to open research. Through reflecting on the role, it is hoped that this case study might provide a model for how PhD candidates working in open research and scholarly communications library teams can promote open research communities of practice and help to ensure their longevity.

Higher education institution (HEI) libraries in the UK undertake a variety of interlibrary loan (ILL) and document supply operations, against a current background of increasing budgetary pressures. This article considers the foundations in so‑called library privilege exceptions in copyright law that underpin the long‑standing practice of ILL, aiming to address recurring issues and questions around what is permitted within the legislation, and which limitations apply. The focus is on addressing the ILL situation as it exists for non‑profit UK HEI academic libraries, including looking at some perceived ‘grey areas’.

New from #UKSGInsights: "Multilingual research dissemination: current practices and implications for bibliometrics" dub.sh/NJjpJG3
English is widely used as a lingua franca in scholarly communication, yet preserving local languages is vital to reaching a broader audience. Disseminating research in multiple languages can help ensure equitable access, a responsibility shared by both publishers and authors. This study examines the practices of both groups to identify any notable differences. Several academic social networks, preprint servers and repositories are analysed to evaluate the resources currently available and their existing policies. Additionally, journals that actively promote multilingual dissemination are reviewed to understand their implementation strategies and how these align with the standards set by their DOI Registration Agency (DOI RA). From the author’s perspective, differing policies across platforms can heavily influence decisions, mainly because not all platforms provide relationship metadata. Publishers face similar challenges, underscoring the urgent need for standardization. Moreover, the lack of consistency creates opportunities for unethical practices in academia, such as counting the total of citations originating from the same article in different languages. This highlights the importance of a more comprehensive approach to evaluating research beyond citation and document counts. Collaboration among publishers, authors and other stakeholders is essential to fostering greater understanding and preventing misconceptions in the academic landscape.
