The Kroetsch shortlist! Delighted to see 'What is Broken' on another award list. Purdy longlist and now this Robert Kroetsch shortlist. And in great company. Alberta publishers rock! Grateful to BPAA in helping get poetry out to readers. 🙏

Out of office. Mostly offline. Summer sabbatical. This is my self-accountability post. Me on a favourite bench on the grounds of Government House. (pic by Taylor Roades) Advice to self: leave ‘the devices’ powered down and walk up to the bench more often. Sit. Maybe read. Maybe just sit.

Hey (Canadian) writing community! Any reading opportunities coming up in '26? I'd love to join fellow poets / authors at events outside BC/AB. Reading series organizers in SK, MB, ON, QC -any openings? I know everyone is hit hard by grant cutbacks, so full funding not always necessary. Ideas? DM me.

Must say, after some months on here, getting virtually no interaction. I haven't invested a lot of time, but it seemed that the old Tweet place generated its own energy. Here, a post gets maybe a couple likes, rarely comments, almost never back-and-forth conversation. Will likely set B'sky aside.

Met a lovely American woman and her dog Scout, hiking at Goldstream Falls today. She seemed very happy to be escaping the Thanksgiving ‘stuff’ south of the border. Salmon, bald eagles, cedars and water. Lots to give thanks for.

Perfect travel read: Blaine Newton’s short story collection Rag Pickers. Charming, moving, expertly crafted, often funny — these stories amaze & delight. Just right for the jumbled reading on journeys: on planes, in airports, in the passenger seat of a van. Recommended. @ucalgarypress.bsky.social

New cycle lanes on Dallas Rd at Ross Bay. Presume that @victoria.ca will add curb dividers? Does anyone know if this treatment will continue up the hill (westbound)?

Oak Bay built one modest apartment. Its elderly high-net-worth denizens are scrambling to find a cliff off which to jump. Or perhaps they will just wade into the Salish Sea. #oakbayapocalypse #densificationhorrors #lifeismiserable #yyjhousing

On Monday we unexpectedly had to say goodbye to Kyna, our furry family member for 12 years. She talked at length as we went about our days, engaging in spirited conversations about poetics or politics or (her favourite subject) deficiencies in our attention to her needs. We will miss her deeply.

Oak Bay is the funniest / saddest ... e.g. Cadboro Bay Rd, wide enough in places for 6 vehicles (with only two active driving lanes) but no room for sidewalks, bike lane, boulevard.

Before jumping on the 'compulsory care' bandwagon for addictions & mental health treatment, let's ensure that everyone who wants VOLUNTARY care can find it? As a parent of a person who needed assistance for decades, I've seen the challenges of finding the right supports @ the right time. Fund them.

Field Notes on Listening is, appropriately, a quiet book. A literary gem from 2022. @kitdobson.bsky.social 's work is characterized by close observation of people & place over time. Change & what is almost unchanging. The opening 50 pages are a braided wonder of memory & discovery. Seek out a copy.

Book watch: In the Bear's House, a new edition of the great novel by Bruce Hunter. Set in 1960s Calgary and Alberta‘s backcountry, In the Bear’s House tells of a creative young mother, Clare Dunlop, raising a deaf son against the insurmountable odds of poverty, mental illness and hardship.

Desire lines: a story written by human (and animal) feet that show us where the landscape plan or the streetscape plan failed. Unfortunately, it's a challenge to get cities to come back to re-do infrastructure. This, from a relatively recent plaza in Victoria. #urbanplanning #placesforpeople

I was wondering about this: relative size of recent California fires compared to recent fires in Canada. More structures destroyed in LA; much more forest burned in Canada. (Chart from CBC News) @johnvaillant.bsky.social #forestfires
