I don’t blame him! Earlier today, I was looking for an old picture of one of my mom‘s cats. I saved this somewhere along the time I’ve been following you because it was such a funny scary picture of MeanCat. Happy early Halloween 🎃 to MeanCat!
A picture of MeanCat Skinner posted couple years ago. MeanCat is precious with his big blue eyes and appeared ready to take on the world.

Though I don’t agree with you about Joliet being too far to matter, I didn’t know about this treaty and appreciate learning about another way in which Chicago/IL’s historical efforts to control water results in oddities. With a grain of salt, I got a quick AI summary.
An AI explanation says “
The geographic limits and legal rules for how far and where the water can
travel dictate its distribution:
1. The Great Lakes Basin Boundary (Strict Restriction) Under the Great Lakes Compact, a legally binding agreement enacted in 2008 between eight states and two Canadian provinces, new or increased bulk transfers of water outside the Great Lakes watershed are strictly banned. The water is legally restricted to the 295,200-square-mile Great
Lakes basin. © Cleveland.c... +2 There are only two exceptions for pipelines or diversions, which are highly
regulated and limited by proximity: • Straddling Communities: Towns whose municipal boundaries are split
by the natural basin line. • Straddling Counties: Cities located entirely outside the basin but within a county that straddles the boundary line (e.g., Waukesha, Wisconsin, located 1.5 miles outside the boundary line, which won a tight legal battle to pipe water under strict rules that force them to return all wastewater
back to the lake). a
Alliance for ... +3
2. The "Chicago Loophole" Exception (Up to ~35-50 Miles) The single largest exception to the rule is the state of Illinois, which operates under a unique U.S. Supreme Court Decree dating back to the
reversal of the Chicago River in 1900.
WPR +1 • Illinois is permitted to divert a set amount of water (3,200 cubic feet per
second per day) outside the basin into the Mississippi River system. • • Because this is governed by the Supreme Court and exempt from the Great Lakes Compact, Chicago is permitted to pipe treated Lake
Michigan water farther inland.
WPR • A prominent example is a historic $1 billion agreement to build a pipeline supplying Lake Michigan water to Joliet, Illinois, located approximately
35 miles southwest of Chicago, set to begin operations by 2030.
Chicago also distributes water up to 3 or 4 communities deep across
Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, and Kane counties. # Marquette L... +3

There‘s a CCC shelter in Lockport, IL, on the I&M Canal (original hang-dug canal that filled in a final connection betw the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico). It was along a short cut I used often for the 5+ years I lived nearby. I stopped a few times to remind myself that good change is possible.
A picture of a CCC shelter in Lockport, Il, with a sign noting it was built about 1934 and is cared for by the Lockport Township Park District. The pavilion is made with limestone and a shingled roof. A fireplace inside is no longer used.

Frightening! That is a reasonable next step if we are following Rod Serling’s imagination to get to a new way of dividing ourselves. From The Eye of the Beholder episode, Twilight Zone.

Love that, seems a waterfront version of my favorite sculpture. Walking one foggy morning years ago, I saw a homeless person wake from sleeping among the legs in a heartbreaking display of the relationship of art and life.
A picture from a Chicago Park District article about one of its wonderful sculptures, the Agora.

“ Comprised of 106 nine-foot-tall headless torsos, Agora is one of the most important and extensive sculptural installations in Chicago’s recent history. The artwork gets its name from the Greek word for meeting place. The cast iron figures are arranged in interesting groupings. Some are frozen in positions that suggest great movement, while others appear to be standing completely still. Most of them are in monumental crowds, although some appear to be pulling away from the larger group.”

I haven’t read it but just moved it into queue! I just finished this 📖. Thought-provoking quick read. ❤️ to all of the non-human critters, except maybe not the Cooper’s Hawk who dive-bombed me the other day, though, in its defense, it was probably 🪺 here long before the first 🏠 went up.

Never in my memory has the ⏰ change caught me by surprise, until just now. Yes, I am older and no one else mentioned it, but I believe my lapse is more a sign of the challenges and heartbreaks of this time in my life, my 🇺🇸, and the 🌍. Today, I remind myself there is still the moment of now to tend.

I am reminded of the protests at the Fed and am imagining what we could use to protest the inflation that is 1) being caused by trump’s insane tariffs and 2) being threatened by his Fed take-over attempts. Can’t afford to leave a pan on Capitol Hill even if we can’t afford the food to cook in it. 🍳🍱
From the Museum of American Finance -
2 x 4 Wood Mailed in Protest to Paul Volcker

Paul Volcker served as Federal Reserve Chairman from 1979 until 1987. Volcker’s policies steered the US economy out of a period of high inflation and slow economic growth by severely raising interest rates. During his tenure, Volcker experienced more political attacks and public protests than any other Fed Chairman, mostly due to the effect of his high interest rates on the construction and agricultural industries. In protest, farmers blockaded the main office of the Board of Governors with their tractors. This piece of 2x4 wood was mailed to Volcker’s office as a part of a protest by building contractors and carpenters, who claimed their lumber was unneeded since no one was buying houses. Although Volcker is now widely credited with stabilizing the economy in the 1980s, these protests show the complexities of managing a national economy, as changes in policy are not necessarily universally beneficial.

Is anyone out there thinking about what we could do now to prepare for Vance, tech bro puppet, as President and whatever nightmare they’d install as VP?
A screen print from the site constitution.congress.gov of the following:

Twenty-Fifth Amendment
Section 1
In case of the removal of the President from office or of his death or resignation, the Vice President shall become President.

Section 2
Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.

Thank you-didn’t know about them! 1) There is no certainty in the AI math-it uses probabilities. 2) Say someone working on AI wanted to stop talk about climate change and a certain frog was going extinct, choices in model training and/or override code (like finding DEI) would do it. Plus:
Google AI returns this description for “matella”
“ Al Overview
+3:
"Matella" can refer to a few different things. It can be a surname, a brand of children's textiles, a term with roots in ancient Latin referrina to a pot or vessel, or even a name associated with a specific instance, like Mitchell Matella, the 2022 Navy Military Child of the Year. Additionally, there's "Mantella" which appears in the context of a Skyrim mod, referring to an ancient artifact.”

I am always thinking about MeanCat when I read your posts, and this one reminded me of the powerful lesson of the Cowardly Lion which made me wonder had it gotten banned. Thankfully it doesn’t appear so but once was. Banning books is always stupid but is more so since the arrival of the internet.
From Canterbury Classics, a picture of The Wizard of Oz book plus, “The Wizard of Oz was banned by all public libraries in 1928 because the book was deemed ungodly for "depicting women in strong leadership roles."
However, the most notorious banning was in 1986 when seven families from Tennessee filed a lawsuit to remove the book from school syllabuses. One parent claimed, "I do not want my children seduced into godless supernaturalism." The case was later taken to the Supreme Court.”

I think about this post that was viral April-May of last year, versus who is in and trying to be in 47’s Cabinet. And wish deeply those who voted for this grasped the irony of their posts and how they have been used.
Many Republicans posted before the election with a meme about how they’d never needed a celebrity while they had needed a doctor. They did this when celebrities offered support for Kamala. But they are supporting a government run by celebrities.

Chicago area here. I just woke to the sound of something rolling down my roof. Especially for folks who are lately new to snow falling, melting a little, refreezing, and repeating, be careful where you stand around homes with sloped roofs and flat roofs with icicles!
A 8-9 inch chunk of ice slid off a roof on to a deck in the Midwest.

I still pop over to the other site on a limited basis for some AI folks and saw this just now. Perhaps a new 📚 genre? If sci-fi hits too close to reality or a traditional “happy” ending feels too sweet, a hopeful book might be just right. #HOPETELLING #BookSky

I saw several versions of this when in school for predictive analytics. I just mentioned to someone on Sunday that we need to add the “next” which is going to be a big jump if we continue to allow the tech bros to eliminate regulation and Republicans to eliminate public accountability.

This likely feral cat wanders around our retention pond every few days. (Showed up when a nearby barn was taken down, wants nothing to do with humans so far.) Today, a cluster of migrating geese floated along following the cat prowled around. I was grateful 🙏 no conflict ensued.
