Maybe we could invent a system where someone streams music to people who like it, then donates a little bit to the performers for every stream. And if they really like an artist then folx go to concerts and donate a lot of money all at once. We could call music funded in this way “popular” music.

Agree. The synopsis of the story given in the article makes it sound like straight fantasy—no more sci fi than Journey to the West. Maybe more borderline because there are no supernatural elements, but also no science or futuristic elements.

I always think about natural science analogies. If you just invented the telescope/microscope, seems like a good idea to just point it at stuff to see what you get with the new perspective. No one would complain.
