California has shown that gas usage for electricity is unneeded, becoming almost entirely usurped for renewable build-outs. Even in Texas, with plenty of cheap land for solar, Google does it the right way using solar+wind+batteries+grid for baseload: www.distilled.earth/p/google-is-...

This reminds me that the late, great writer Jorge Luis Borges was denied the right to translate some of his own work from Spanish to English, due to "translation rights" being separate from copyright. He was a master of several languages, so that was doubly unjust.

Generally agree w/your prescient chat from earlier, also per Thurston's quote (paraphrasing) that theorems aren't everything. Well if you dislike the seemingly "ad hoc finiteness" of "4 colo(u)rs suffice!" you won't dig complete solutions for checkers or the 20-turn spoiler for the 3x3x3 Rubik's cube. But humans *have* learned much along the way to those solution states (from Singmaster to Thistlethwaite for the latter).

Agree. In the game of "mutual assured destruction", there is leverage available to other actors. E.g. for our beloved Canada, if Trump gets too insane, they can just switch off electric power to the U.S. in an instant. The "bricking" that Doctorow bemoans is not patented by a single state.

You've raised many great points. But to get around the "chokepoint capitalism" of the app store duopoly, there are (possibly quaint) things called websites to "route around damage" (tip to John Gilmore). This is at least true for ICE raid trackers like those from: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

In general, yes, except for UPS/FedEx-specific customer invoice refunds. But the new section 301 tariffs are now substituting for the old illegal ones, until the Supremes may or may not overrule some or all months from now. Yup, a scam, but what's an affected corp supposed to do now w/301 in play?

Because demand for fossil fuels is peaking. E.g. "Peak gasoline" happened 3 years back due to EV uptake. With the Hormuz shock, countries that have depended upon Mideast oil (Japan etc.) have instantly cut back 20% equalizing the supply. It's a new world of renewables, despite Trump ignoring that.

For San Francisco, although the electrification of 150- and 400-passenger ferries is quite admirable, the real action will be with the 30-passenger Candela P12 catamarans. Sausalito to SF in 15 minutes. Private vs. public, so higher-cost, but highly efficient requiring much less infrastructure.

Reading the good professor's revised edition now. It's clear that his tome influenced Bill McKibben's "Here Comes the Sun", where M. Z. Jacobson made an appearance. It's sad that Hormuz now has galvanized appropriate action plans around the planet, but wind/water/solar has indeed won.

(2/2) So, ride/drive EVs when you don't walk, bike or take public transport, use heat pumps, install solar when possible, and wash your clothes with cold water. Little of that is hard, so no need to "sacrifice" by wearing the Jimmy Carter sweater in winter, or driving at 55mph. Read Bill McKibben.

(1/2) It's a good thing that renewable solar/wind/water/battery energy has already won against fossil fuel--95%+ of new utility-scale power installations around the world use renewable energy, because it's economically cheaper. Some peeps don't want you to know this, but it's the way of the world...

It can also be ended by just a few votes in the U.S. House of Reps to impeach & 20 Senators to convict. Until this simple thing happens, the less than two dozen people are enablers of war crimes (and complicit in many other senseless deaths, e.g. from ICE + USAID/vaccine/climate change denial).

Thanx. I'm sympathetic; I live in a major city where Tourette syndrome occurs in public enough to evoke reactions, whether or not it is properly understood. Here the irony is that although the syndrome is "uncontrollable", it takes much self-control to make a TikTok vid to present it unvarnished.

The excess COVID deaths caused by DJT-encouraged vaccine hesitancy were estimated at 200,000-300,000. Agree that USAID stoppage estimates result in more annually per simulations, only to be attenuated by gap filling by other governments or intl. actors. Climate change death is another horrorshow.
