Lisa Nandy is quitting X over abuse and misinformation but the main alternative platform is worse

Twitter - formally known as X, since owner Elon Musk changed its name in 2023 - is a cesspit of hate, intolerance and bigotry. Which is one key reason why I am now in my 18th year on the site and cannot imagine leaving.

Unlike, that is, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, who announced on X on Thursday: "I've decided to leave this platform and my department will too. A platform originally designed for free speech and expression now favours abuse and misinformation over meaningful debate."

She's certainly right about that. Abuse and misinformation are everywhere on X. Foreign bots run amok; there are entire factories in Russia and elsewhere which exist to drive misinformation and stir up hate on X and other social media.

But that's exactly why I stay. X remains unparalleled as a social media site focused on news, comment and discussion with around 570 million monthly active users. What happens if those of us who aren't driven by hate and who try to use reason rather than gut impulse (or at least like to think we do) leave? The bigots, the bots and the lunatics have the place to themselves.

As a relatively prominent Jew, my daily experience is of unrelenting anti-Semitism and abuse. I've stopped reporting most of it now to X, which does nothing about it; occasionally I report a threat to the police, if there's something that specific, such as a mention of where ! live. I've muted or blocked nearly 4,000 accounts, almost all for anti-Semitism

Which is why I stay. I'm not naive enough to think that I, and the others who take on the lies, can make more than a small difference. But if we don't try, who will? As Kemi Badenoch responded to Nandy: "DCMS is supposed to counter and deal with misinformation, not run away because it's all too much."

Nandy's posts can now be found on Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin. Intriguingly, she hasn't - yet? - joined Bluesky, which was set up as a rival to X in 2024. Bluesky. positions itself as a progressive haven - and if you think X is bad, Bluesky is its own kind of hellish vision of a world in which progressives rule the roost.

It's often described as an echo chamber, but it's worse: anyone who dares to offer a counter view is immediately targeted with the kind of vicious, sneering odium that only those who see themselves as kinder, nicer humans dish out.

The writer Billy Binion posted that "billionaires should exist". He reports that he "logged onto Bluesky to find thousands of people screaming at me, many of whom were telling me to kill myself".

Research last year by Pew found that 69 per cent of news influencers who identified as liberal/Democrat had a Bluesky account, against only 15 per cent
conservative/Republican. Another study of 300 million Bluesky posts showed a "predominantly centre-Left-leaning user base" with political alignment "skewed towards liberal leaning". Bluesky allows users to share
"block lists" to purge Right-leaning accounts from their sight.

But awful as Bluesky is, it's an irrelevance. The number of posters peaked at 1.5 million a day in November 2024 - just after Donald Trump was re-elected. Presumably they were there for a combination of a group hug and a scream. But it's now down to 600,000 a day. It's the same story with daily followers, down from 3.1 million a day in November 2024 to under 400,000 a day now. Bluesky posters are preaching to the converted.

I know it’s Reddit, but I’ve checked this with a couple of Tesco van drivers now and they say it’s absolutely true It’s horrific. Are there not rules about working conditions & temperatures? Tesco should be taken to court over this. I’m serious. This is a huge risk to health It makes me angry 😡

Last winter it was icy cold out and our delivery driver seemed to be struggling. I asked if he was ok and he said the cold was getting to him. I said hopefully the van will warm him and he said no it doesn't have a heater. I asked if it was broken and he said no, Tesco remove them from the vans to cut costs.
(Edit - a few people have said this isn't true - but one user did clarify that it's more a case of repair requests being ignored as they need vans on the road to meet demand so it's likely either I misunderstood or he mispoke)
Now we're sat in (what is expected to be) the biggest heatwave in UK history and I asked a different delivery driver today if he has an AC/Fan in his van and he laughed and said no. Of course they don't.
These people are expected to work through the absolute worst extremes of our weather and Tesco cannot even provide them with the tools to stay cool or warm during the worst days?
This is vile and the very least they could do considering the record profits they make.
