They shake and shiver, battering their eyes against the onslaught of frost, but their will to survive does not falter.

The isle they stand on is not completely overcome with frost. Life still bleeds from between the ice, which is more than what could be said about the surface, according to Visna. A part of Freya is curious so see what it's like— to have a world be completely overcome by snow—, but she feels she won't get to see for herself any time soon.

Freya stands between Alphinaud and Visna as they look over the edge. Visna, ever the diligent sky-farer, is constantly on the lookout for more thralls, while Alphinaud is shivering and rubbing his hands, trying to stave off the cold. Unlike Garlemald, he's unequipped for the weather, but she thought he might've gotten used to it through Ishgard. Maybe Tural has taken him off guard.

Even when paint is concentrated to her brush with all her might and swung out Y'shtola's shield, it barely does a dent. The lack of a crack in the defence is highly frustrating.

Freya still hears Esteem's whispers, deep within her heart.

Most of the time, they're unintelligible, a mere annoyance at worst and a lullaby at best. But sometimes, the whispers form into a melody, stringing along words and sounds that don't make sense.

Our soul.

Our heart.

Fuel darkness and flames—

—hatred within.

Those are the only words that Freya can figure out, yet she does not know their meaning. She can only hope to find out if she continues wielding her greatsword until her deathbed.

Perhaps, one day, she'll know the answer.

Estel has been stared at her entire life.

In the Azim Steppe, everyone stared at her. Her abnormal amount of scales caught the attention of everyone first, before they realised the swish of her bone tail was vastly different from theirs.

In Tural… well, Au Ra weren't too common there in the first place. The stares of seeing something foreign is a bit more understandable to her, at least until someone commented that she was a lot taller than the other female Auri that they've seen.

Her skills in painting have come a long way since she first started; where her art used to look like a toddler taking a brush and slapping paint onto the canvas, she now feels she's got stroke and brush techniques, as well as colour theory, down to a T. Landscape is her forte, she realises, the human structure and anatomy being too much for her to do. Though, Leih does love painting a moogle from time to time.

How long has she been stuck in this position? An hour? No, it's been much longer than that by now. Leih came here when the sun had just cracked upon the surface. By the time her arms go limp and she can no longer hold up the paintbrush, the sun is starting to set.

With a nine year age gap between them, they didn't have too much in common. Maral was interested in continuing the Bayaqud tradition of marrying multiple men— whether for her own interests or mother's, Estel couldn't figure out—, yet Estel wanted to explore the world and see what it had to offer. Romance wasn't off the table completely, but her mother had thought Estel couldn't continue it herself. Too many 'abnormalities with how she was born', or something like that.

Despite their differences, they still loved each other.

She feels like she's suffocating. The Warrior of Light is suffocating. Breathing is as much work as fighting these days, where Freya can cut down man and beast with ease, but doing any basic human function feels like a chore. To do anything but fight and sleep sounds absolutely tiring. She can't find any reason to do it at all.

Nowadays, when she struggles to breathe, there is someone there to help her.

Estel has danced along this thread many times before, her soul deteriorating each time, but it doesn't bother her anymore. Instead, she revels in the out-of-body state, trailing along the Lifestream countless times.

And every single instance of this, she always thinks: will I die this time? Will my soul break apart into little pieces, scattering across the sea until there's nothing left of me?

Leih's days of adventuring are over. Kind of. She will help if she is called, but she will not go out of her way to follow danger around wherever it goes. At most, she will sit with Tataru and cheer everyone on, and keep Tataru company as she writes paperwork. Speaking of paperwork, however, Leih has a stack in front of her at the table of the Rising Stones. It seems like all that time she's taken the aetherytes to and from places to help the Scions has caught up with her.

G'raha Tia sits across from her, his own paperwork stacked against him, though it seems it's for a completely different issue. He has told Leih how he'll take ferries over anything else, if only so that he won't have be in Leih's very own predicament. Smart, but the thought of being on a ferry makes Leih seasick.

And then there's Y'shtola; not a care in in the world as she sips on a cup of tea.

Simply put, if Estel isn't interested in something, she won't put in sufficient effort into becoming better at her. Many people have told her that she can be really good at chess, for example, but she finds the hobby extremely boring. There are many things she can be good at if she puts her mind at it.

Now, Freya has had tea many times. If you told her years and years ago that she'd be sitting here, having a cup of tea with two friends, she'd definitely look at you funny. As someone who ravages her enemies with dark arts and a greatsword, she could never imagine herself having a cup of tea back then.

It's nice, though, to indulge in something so slow and calming such as this. Something so little makes Freya feel so human.

"The Far East… it has some nice tea leaves there," Freya mutters into her cup, taking a small sip as she speaks to the two of them. "If I bring them back next time, could you do something with them?"

In an ideal world, Leih would never have to meet the girls that were on that boat again. Not the ones who looked down on her, and certainly not the ones she bullied either. All she wants to do is leave that part of her behind and never have to see it again.

Life has other plans. Though she doesn't necessarily believe in a higher power, it seems like karma has caught up with her.

Eleanor was a girl on the same pleasure barge as Leih. While she wasn't sure of the circumstances, Leih knew that Eleanor was given some type of special treatment, which had pissed the Miqo'te off. She was set on making the Hyur's life as miserable as hers. It was a time Leih is not proud of.

Milisandia, Ricon, Rex, Alfonse. How long since she's watched them sacrifice themselves, go through agony in their last moments, all so one day Allie could smile up at the sun instead of resent it? She doesn't know at this point. The days merge together.

My friends and you. Freya notes the particular wording with a glint of her lilac eyes, but otherwise does not comment on it. "It's just that… I get injured a lot more than others. Surely it tires you out. O-Or, tires out your mana, or something…" The arcane arts, despite wielding some form of it, is still an unknown entity to her. Freya imagines how she wants to use it, and it works just like that.

Well, actually, it isn't Alexandria anymore, is it? It's Solution Nine.

Sphene has to remind herself that as she stares into the brown, milky drink known as bubble tea. It's quite peculiar; a cold—instead of hot, like she's used to—, milky brew with chewy black balls at the bottom called 'tapioca'. She heard from the other residents that it was popular for a short amount of time, and Sphene can see why. It's quite easy to travel around with, as opposed to a regular cup of tea.

Freya lets out a huff as the blade is released from the monster, which falls to the ground with one last groan. Her hands grip tight on the hilt, she can feel it sink deep and engrave itself into her palm. When she released one hand to look at it, she can see it's red and sore, gaining cuts and blisters just from the grip alone. She notes that it's a similar feeling from back then, too. It lets her know that she is alive, that she is not a walking corpse that people believe her to be when she taps into the power of a Dark Knight.

But sometimes, she still feels like she's dead.

Especially when she comes back from a particularly hard fight, back to the Scions where she is covered in blood, and sweat, and sometimes her own tears. She knows their looks well; a mix of pity and fear: look at her, still just a child. It's the same look those adults gave her back then, the ones that betted on her. The ones who watched in horror, but did nothing else. These looks make her feel like she's a dead girl walking.

Estel hums for a moment, tapping her finger on her chin. "I hope they're letting you have frequent water breaks then. Have you heard of sweet maple mate? It's used by the Pelupelu to stave off deep fatigue. If you're able to get some, I'd highly suggest it."

He looks at her incredulously, as if expecting some twist or catch. Estel, on the other hand, stands up straight with a smile as she waits for his answer.

Her breathing is raggered and her heart thumps against her chest. Green spiralled eyes widen with each second as Leih looks at her orphanage for the first time in four years. Or, rather, what's left of it.

Being a poor building in Uldah, it was never refined or perfect in the first place, but it felt like home. Now, it's souless, run-down and beaten, with wooden planks covering the windows and a door that is half off its hinges.

Many thoughts run through Leih's mind. Was the gil she was sending each month not enough? Could they not afford to run the orphanage anymore? Or did bandits raid it, forcing them out?

And the children… are they—

"I really hope you don't," Maral mutters. "And don't dodge the question, please. I know she can be harsh sometimes, but she means well."

Estel glances back at Maral, the strands of her blue ponytail falling off her back, as if running away from the conversation themselves. "So she can call me an abomination, but it's bad when I call her a hag?"

Have you ever felt like a bird trapped in a cage?

You felt different. In an environment where people thrived on its culture, you rejected it, hated it even. When you didn't conform to those rules, you were looked at with disdain, pity, bewilderment. It made you feel like you did something wrong. It made you feel trapped.

Even when you left the planet, found sanctuary on another, and surrounded yourself with sheep, you felt like something wasn't right. Auriel looked up to the stars each night and wondered why she wasn't happy with life. Where was the key for her lock?

Then she met a Gnosia for the first time.

A person does not undergo a change of personality when they turn into a Gnosia, but instead give into their desires; violent and sexual tendencies erupt from them, leading to brutal acts and further infection. They're an abomination to the universe, and yet scientists want to make a cure. How laughable.

The first Gnosia she met did not hesitate to lunge at her, scaring off the sheep that she was herding. Whether it was aiming for her or the animals was not her concern, for she raised her stick without a second thought and slammed it into it's skull. The sickening crack and thud as it fell to the ground, unmoving, was a sound Auriel could never forget. It was the first time she killed someone- though calling it someone was a far-fetched concept-, yet she felt not guilt nor regret. No, what she felt was satisfaction.

Satisfaction to be ridding the universe of such vile creatures.

And when she killed the last Gnosia on the DQO ship, the same as before, she felt angelic. Everyone stared at her like they were looking at a monster, but Auriel felt free. She truly believed that she had grown her wings and soared in that very moment.

"Look, I'll be blunt here, you haven't met any of your goals in a month," Brett starts, twirling a pen in his hand as he looks at Shania. "That, and you've gotten sloppy. You're making mistakes, constantly, and customers are complaining about you. You can't just be pretty and think that's going to excuse everything else."

Shania cringes at the comment, but the lack of a backup job stops her from telling him to fuck off and eat rocks. "I-I'm sorry, I don't know what's up with me recently, I think—", she hesitates, but Brett raises his arms and nods at her, asking her to continue, "—I just think I'm burnt out, that's all. Here, I just feel like… like I'm a robot, not a person."

As soon as the words leave her mouth, she regrets saying them, especially when silence follows. And then, Brett laughs, as if he's just been told the funniest joke in the world. Shania has no choice but to stand there, like an idiot, and it's only when she tries laughing along that he stops.

💛 Anime: Shiboyugi 💛 3/5 ⭐ As a LN reader, the amount of context this anime decides to take out for the sake of visuals/aesthetics (they are nice) is very jarring. They also only really did 2/4 of the arcs well. If you do watch this, definitely pick up the LN as well.

💛 Film: A Pale View of Hills 💛 3.5/5 ⭐ Very interesting. The plot twist was predictable, though the way they went about it was still quite interesting either way. I'm considering reading the novel itself, but this was still a nice watch.
