A nice article about our new QSR paper on rapid precipitation, vegetation, and fire transitions in the Turkana Basin!

My postdoc, Julian Traphagan, has a new paper out in Organic Geochemistry! He performed a series of experiments on our GC-IRMS @au.dk and showed that spiking low-conc samples with standards could make some unobtainable compound-specific n-alkane dD measurements now obtainable. Check it out!

This paper is particularly exciting for me because it documents the first data actually measured in my lab at @au.dk. Also, the team had another paper come out the same day, also in QSR, led by Cat Beck: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

IF hominins were at all interacting with fire during this time, which we can't say with these data, it would have occurred during strong-monsoon, high-insolation (modulated by eccentricity) intervals. This has inspired work looking at even finer timescales throughout various insolation parameters.

We find that the Turkana Basin was fuel-limited, much like during the African Humid Period, meaning that precipitation-fed vegetation is the limiting factor for fire activity. Once the monsoon strengthens in response to insolation change, fire activity increases, and dampens biomass growth. 🔥🌧️🌳

Thrilled (and honored!) that Prof. Cat Beck from Hamilton College visited me at @au.dk during her sabbatical in Cologne. Cat and I have worked in Turkana, specifically on the HSPDP Lake Turkana drill core, for many years. It was great to catch up and talk about fun new things!

We’re in Azerbaijan for field work! I’m collecting biomarker samples from a beautiful sediment sequence in the Azykh cave, where hominins lived over hundreds of thousands of years (we think, lol 😝). Downright honored to be a part of this team in this stunning landscape.
