Yeah, podcasting is all a bit too corporate these days with a few exceptions. It's clearly more about creating content advertisers will like than content listeners will like (even though obviously) the two are connected. You only have to listen to the adverts podcasting companies run at advertisers.

I call her a bigot because I want you to re-write that post saying 'oh, I was worried about my Mum being in a ward with black people...or lesbians...or Muslims.'

The fact that this Labour MP is still on Twitter says all your need to know about their morality. She's still there. In the swamp. Doing her transphobia thing. Because X is a much more comfortable place to do that in. A safe space for bigots.

How his wife stays married to this bigot is a mystery to me. I assume he doesn't really mean this shit and goes home and says 'Sorry I was a racist arsehole and that might end up effecting you and our kids but I've got to say this stuff to have a chance of being GOP candidate for President.'

Well, that's rubbish. It's amazing that the Society of Authors can write such nonsense. Probably using AI. But it seems a basic surrender without even a fight, which makes you wonder whether they'll fight for anything. Probably time to find another union.

There is a reason that poem begins 'First they came for...' Because removing the dignity and rights of one group opens the door to you doing it to others. First they came for trans people...then they came for the Muslims...then they came for the Disabled...then they came for gay people...2/2

Every rule like this for trans people, even time we kowtow to people who feel 'uncomfortable' around another group of people we know that rule could be applied to other groups. I'm waiting for the 'I'm not comfortable around Muslims/Gay People/Black People' follow-ups to the trans thin edge. 1/2

It’s a great Doctor Who performance. Weirdly ‘Children of the Stones’ passed me by. I’ve still never watched it.

I read that this year and thought it was excellent. I'm surprised people don't talk about it more, especially compared to I, Cluadius.

I've been shocked by a lot of what's happened to our science system over the last three years but banning puns in proposal titles is a new low, surely.
Screencap of a section from MBIE's 'Programmes Proposal Template – 2027 Transition Research Fund' specifying that titles of proposals may not include acronyms, abbreviations, 'humorous "tabloid" style titles', or puns.

I have fallen down a Sappho rabbit hole. I'm having fun comparing translations, especially of really short fragments. So far Anne Carson wins, but - not knowing Ancient Greek - I can't really judge on accuracy just poetry.

I give it an additional 24hrs on my original 48hr timeline before they delete their AI Charter and someone resigns. Because no further explanation is going to cut it.

The Caine Prize is an award for African writers, judged by other African writers. As a Ghanaian/Nigerian-American, I've followed the Caine Prize for years-- I read African literature. The Atlantic article uses AI to justify overriding the judgment of African people reading their own literature.

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

What chills me more is that the Atlantic article's author not only scanned Kundieza's work, but also scanned 25 years' worth of Caine Prize awardees to check whether they were human. A prize for African writers. It feels like the literary equivalent of doing a non-consensual genital check.

Is it not the truth that no spy novel can ever be 'the truth' because it is always going to be less exciting in real life - except in the odd moment. I always liked your father's books because they felt nearer to what day-to-day life must be like without feeling it was 'the truth'.

For all the terrible politicians in Britain at the moment I still think Jenrick is the worst. Because I don't think he has an actual principle that he genuinely holds so his cruelty, his stupidity, his venality is all built on nothing but ego and ambition.

I give @societyofauthors.bsky.social 48hrs before that AI Charter has to be withdrawn. Once the resignations start to come in. Perhaps it is time for authors to form a new organisation that will represent them properly in the face of the massive theft of their work.

Hi, you’re meant to be our advocacy group? This decision sucks. My books were stolen by AI companies, as were millions of books by other writers; it’s the biggest copyright theft in human history — there is no ethical AI when the technology itself is predicated on IP theft

Wow. The Society of Authors has just abdicated its role as an Advocacy Group to bow down to AI. THERE IS NO ETHICAL AI USE. It is environmental poison before you even start with the theft of IP.

When people discuss the most beautiful women in history I always think Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor are probably up there. I mean you could see either of them playing Helen of Troy. (I'm making an assumption that neither of them actually did.)

Newsnight is increasingly useless. BBC News is increasingly useless. It's ideas of balance are baffling and usually only seen to go one way, e.g. on trans issues there's clearly no balance. They try sometimes but they always err on the side of caution - or cowardice.

I have never read the Narnia books, which is a shocker considering my Tolkien and Inkling obsession. I've even read a Charles Williams book, but there was something about C S Lewis and his world building that always rubbed me up the wrong way.

My thought has always been do what they did with Cushing. Do big screen versions of some of Classic Who's great stories. Whilst a TV series runs with a different Doctor. Weave them in and out of the schedule so they don't run at the same time.

Fuck the Times, which is once again, going down the road of deciding that there are deserving people and undeserving people. Trying to drag us back to the 1920s and 30s. People who write for the Times are part of a campaign that will bring pain and misery to people. It is a terrible newspaper.

Sometimes there are good reasons to say no to things, but you should I think question why you're saying no a little more. I have a lot of regrets as I approach 56 years old and almost all of them are the things I didn't do and the conversations I never had. Get busy living...2/2

I've been thinking a lot about mortality in the last week. Partly my own - my health hasn't been good - and partly friends. Two people I know died in two days and it made me think two things: 1) Don't put off things even - especially? - if they seem hard 2) Say yes more than you say no. 1/2
