The idea that remakes/remasters are restoration is maybe the worst argument for them. I think it's the most dangerous, as it tries to intellectualise a profoundly corporate practice. It is also just entirely wrong, and I'd like to explain why.

the rhetoric around it isnt even noteworthy anymore. the daily wire and its supporters treat this movie like its revealing the TRUTH about naive gays and brave christians because they think movies are real life, which was clear in the rhetoric around the last rhf and other films in recent years.

like at least ladyballers warranted discussion of the craft, that was billed as a comedy and the ways in which it failed to be funny was something substantive to talk about. at least pendragon cycle was a bad and misshapen passion project. at least run hide fight 1 had things to talk about.

im hearing returning stuff will be free. the paywalls are still numerous from the current dlcs, but those at least go on sale for cheap now. i still wouldnt call it ideal practice but its a bit more reasonable and accessible at this point

Blackwood: Act 1 (2026) - I have more thoughts on this game but like. imagine making a john wick game thats 3/4ths managing a video rental store by volume, and almost every asset in the video store is ai generated. imagine shooting yourself in the foot that hard.

inherently against remakes, but i feel that many of the ones we see today are analogous to that 1:1 psycho remake, which added nothing to the world beyond "we tried to do this thing". its the dead end of adaptation

the exact same original text but with newer technology. they arent bringing enough of their own perception to the table. now, something like the final fantasy 7 remakes, qualitative issues aside, are adapting the original text into their own thing that exist in dialogue with the original. im not

retranslations are in a sense adaptations, with different linguists attempting to communicate their perception of the original text. imo the way many game remakes are made is less like retranslating the odyssey and more like the shot for shot Psycho remake: an adaptation that wishes to communicate
