We act based on emotion and justify our actions using reason. Logic is the slave of passion in this book, just as it is in Crime and Punishment, a novel worlds removed from 1950s Vietnam. Greene’s great achievement is refusing to let either idealism or realism off the moral hook.

Their competing desires to control Phuong mirror the larger paternalism at work in Vietnam: both men convince themselves that they know what is best for her and for the country. ->

It’s a slow, realistic, sad burn. One man is an idealist with a code who facilitates atrocities in the name of a larger political vision. The other is a realist who facilitates an atrocity for baser, more personal reasons. ->

Review of the Quiet American by Graham Greene The Quiet American is a study in micro and macro moral compromises. No one is immune. We all try to justify our actions, and some of us even believe our own rationalizations without looking deeper into what actually drives us. ->

There’s Life Before Your First Tarpon... and After. 🎣 For me, there certainly was❗ Clipped from a great talk I had on Fresh Off the Stack about my new novel #Poontown, fishing, writing, and an obsession with both.

I absolutely LOVE this. Christian Bale spent roughly 17 years fighting to make this happen. This week, his foster-care village opened in Palmdale, California: 12 homes built specifically to help keep siblings together when they enter foster care.

Relationships strain, snap, and occasionally bite back. Sharks behave exactly as advertised. Tarpon do what tarpon do—silver, violent, and a little supernatural. Not everyone respects what should be left in the water.

Humans get injured. Some of them earn it. Boats collide—with things, and occasionally with judgment. Anglers loathe jet skiers. This is not resolved peacefully. Obsession takes root and refuses to leave.

Trigger Warning (Apparently) 🧵 My copy editor suggested I include one in Poontown. I declined. Then reconsidered. So here we are: Tarpon are sometimes called “poons.” Draw your own conclusions. Fish get hooked. Not metaphorically.
