Opening the doors at The Palm Houses
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) – the Botanics – is a place which is very special to everyone in the capital. This autumn the world-leading institution is marking a distinct moment in the Garden’s history with the opening of the newly redeveloped A-listed Palm Houses on 2 October.  This is part of the Edinburgh Biomes programme, and is hailed as the most ambitious restoration scheme in the history of the Botanics. As well as plants to see, there is a new visitor experience with films and other multimedia and multisensory digital tours.

The night sky over Edinburgh and Lothians in October
The October sky features several meteor showers and a parade of planets in the wee, small, hours all month long. British Summer Time ends on 25 October at 2 am. The Sun passes from Virgo (The Maiden) on 31 October 11:43 am and enters Libra (The Scales) and comes closer by 1,292,784 km (0.009 AU) over the whole month. Daylight shortens from 11:33 (11.543 hours) on 1 October to 09:17 (9.287 hours) on 31 October so we gain 2 hours and 15 minutes of night time, by the end of the month.

Demand action on climate shocks: rally outside the Scottish Parliament
Extreme weather is no longer a future threat in Scotland — it’s here. From severe wildfires burning through much-loved landscapes, to streets under water and rivers running dry, our communities are paying the price for political gridlock. On Wednesday, MSPs are gathering at Holyrood for a debate on Scotland's climate defences — and we need your local representatives to show up. Government policy has spent years avoiding difficult choices. We are calling on the Scottish Government to back a national Landscape Resilience Summit and a dedicated UK Climate Shock Fund to scale up nature-based solutions that protect our homes from fire, flood and drought before disasters strike. Your MSPs need to hear directly from the people they represent before they walk into the Scottish Parliament. Join us outside the Scottish Parliament on Wednesday 3 - 5pm to show support for the debate.

In 1900, Swiss physician & naturalist Auguste Forel noted that honeybees visited his breakfast table at the same time every morning, even when food was absent. He wondered idly if they had a sense of time. This began a chain reaction that ended *55 years later* with JET-LAGGED BEES. I'll explain.
A photo of Auguste Forel, sitting in his garden. Later in life he got very into the Baha'i faith, and he was quite the polymath. He has a walking stick, a very Swiss straw hat and neat white beard. A smallish house is behind him.
