Laura Miller @lmillerethicist.bsky.social · 14/02/2025It's a huge sticking point because the technology needs to 'see' your space and surroundings - even you - for it to be effective. 000
Laura Miller @lmillerethicist.bsky.social · 14/02/2025I was reminded of the challenges for those in a wheelchair or homebound to visit the ocean without assistance. Things like that are really important. 000
Laura Miller @lmillerethicist.bsky.social · 14/02/2025Absolutely! And even help them explore spaces that would be difficult if they were unable to explore them otherwise. For example, through a disability. 000

Laura Miller @lmillerethicist.bsky.social · 14/02/2025AR and VR really do have a lot to offer. And they can be really beneficial for therapeutic uses. But, we always have to remember that there's an exchange - privacy being a huge concern and need to be addressed. Tackling that would be a part of being trauma informed. 010

Laura Miller @lmillerethicist.bsky.social · 07/02/2025People. You cannot do this without bringing people along. We also must be honest about capabilities and what they are and aren't. We need oversight and ethics, laws and regulations that are enforceable, and the support of the people. Revolutionizing the world is a hard pass for me without them. 001

Laura Miller @lmillerethicist.bsky.social · 07/02/2025If you make it, release it, or use it - the burdens fall to you. The tech days of build in your garage (or basement) and hurl into our world and walk away - those have ended. And you should expect a knock at your door should you believe otherwise. 000
Laura Miller @lmillerethicist.bsky.social · 07/02/2025The technology is only as good as those developing, deploying, and using this technology. We have every right to hold these innovators to the highest standard because of the reach and impact of their work. #AI is #global. With great privilege comes great responsibility. 101

(I love that they included some advice for change.) - This is the UN Environment Programme!unep.orgAI has an environmental problem. Here’s what the world can do about that. The sprawling data centres that house AI servers churn out toxic electronic waste and are voracious consumers of electricity, which in most places is still produced from fossil fuels. 001
Laura Miller @lmillerethicist.bsky.social · 07/02/2025To clarify - TX power grid often fails and Thailand has reduced access to clean water. Tech has moved quickly into both. *Data centers can be designed differently to consume less water - but it's expensive. 010
Laura Miller @lmillerethicist.bsky.social · 07/02/2025Right now, they are using tons of energy. I also worry about the mass consumption of potable water. It is something to investigate to start with enormous data centers in areas with reduced drinking water sources or challenges. There is a big push in Thailand and a lot of energy consumption in Texas. 010
Laura Miller @lmillerethicist.bsky.social · 07/02/2025#DEI and #Inclusion or #Exclusion all need to be addressed. Remember that some people do not have access to this kind of technology. How do we include them if they are excluded by default? These technologies can really improve the circumstances of many—or harm them. 001
Laura Miller @lmillerethicist.bsky.social · 07/02/2025Recognize where those groups and people are, what kind of technology they use, and their approach (caution, excitement, fear), and then work within that space. Be specific and intentional in messaging and address their reality. And be willing to delay or adjust plans when needed! 000
Laura Miller @lmillerethicist.bsky.social · 07/02/2025Yes, it absolutely does traumatize if it goes too fast. Many forget that AI will involve change management, and it shouldn't be brought to others without those plans and strategies in place. 101
